ROTUNDA

Roundabouts - a place where three or more roads join and traffic must go around a circular area in

the middle, rather than straight across

GOALS

Improve safety - Roundabouts reduced injury crashes at intersections where stop signs or signals were
previously used for traffic control.

 Low travel speeds – Drivers must slow down and yield to traffic before entering a roundabout.
Speeds in the roundabout are typically between 15 and 20 miles per hour. The few collisions
that occur in roundabouts are typically minor and cause few injuries since they occur at such low
speeds.
 One-way travel – Roads entering a roundabout are gently curved to direct drivers into the
intersection and help them travel counterclockwise around the roundabout. The curved roads
and one-way travel around the roundabout eliminate the possibility for T-bone and head-on
collisions.

Advantages

Reduce delay, improve traffic flow

Roundabouts promote a continuous flow of traffic. Unlike intersections with traffic signals, drivers don’t
have to wait for a green light or a “Go” signal to get through the intersection.

Less expensive

Because they result in far fewer injury and fatal crashes than traffic signals, roundabouts produce lower
long-term costs to society as a result of these crashes.  Roundabouts do not require as much
maintenance as signals and only require electricity for lighting at night. Considering all of these items,
roundabouts may cost more than traffic signals initially but are far less expensive in the long run.

Less space

A roundabout may need more property within the actual intersection, but often take up less space on
the streets approaching the roundabout. Because roundabouts can handle greater volumes of traffic
more efficiently than signals, where drivers may need to line up to wait for a green light, roundabouts
usually require fewer lanes approaching the intersection.
DETAILS

The rotunda design has a four-statue representing the Santa Catalina, Ilocos Sur; First was the
soldier statue represents Juan De Salcedo who named the place “Santa Catalina”. Then their
patron saint, Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Lastly the farmer and the fisherman which represent
their main livelihood.

MATERIALS

Marble – is a natural stone, so it’s more resistant to scratching, cracking and breaking than
many other available materials and it looks gorgeous.

Brick - is a low maintenance, permanent, durable, won't rot, rust, burn, corrode or decayed.
