RADIAL ROAD NETWORK PATTERN
TYPES

1. Star and Block Pattern

2. Star and Circular Pattern

3. Star and Grid Pattern

1. Star and Block Pattern

Consists of radial roads extending from a

central point, resembling the spokes of a
wheel.

Blocks of buildings or houses are organized

around the radial roads, creating a network
of interconnected blocks.

The central point often serves as a hub for

commercial activities and may be organized
as a square or circular area.
PROS CONS
- Enhanced safety compared to rectangular -Lack of safety appurtenances like rail
patterns. transitions, crash attenuators and post
support bases.
-Alleviates congestion at the primary bottleneck
location.
-Only effective when 2-lane ramp traffic does
-Offers alternative routes in case of closure of a not have to merge at a downstream end of
radial route. the ramp

-The radial roads provide efficient transportation

from the center to the outer areas.

-The blocks surrounding the central point offer

space for residential or commercial development.
2. Star and Circular Pattern

In urban planning, a Radial or Star &

Circular pattern is a way to set up streets
so that roads radiate from a central point
and form a circle around it. This central
point is usually a central business district
or a central square, and the roads lead to
other parts of the city.
PROS CONS
* Safer than rectangle and star and block pattern * Providing good curve is quite challenging
because vehicle travel in the same direction
* Affects the driving ability ( mainly old
* Roundabouts present in this pattern improves drivers due to a decrease in vision)
the efficiency of traffic flow. Also reduces fuel
consumption and emissions of the vehicle. * Necessary for the proper provision of the
traffic signal, road markings and lighting to
alert drivers
* Reduces the possibilty of rear-end crashes.
* Splitter islands should be extended far
enough to provide crosswalks and describe
the roundabout
3. Star and Grid Pattern

In urban planning, roads radiate

from a central point and form a grid
around it in the Radial or Star & Grid
pattern. The roads radiate from a
central business district or central
square.
PROS CONS
* Increases the efficiency of land usage and unit * Splitter islands should be extended far enough
density
* High consumption cost for extra road
* Improves traffic flow in both directions markings and signals

* Provides high safety to vehicular traffic with a

high proportion of 3-way intersections

* Reduces the cut-through traffic.
