Scenario 1
2 areas of concern
As a teacher, there are multiple significant issues of concern you would identify for this class
group. The first being the level disengagement of students and their engagement in off-task
activities despite them showing interest in the content material. This is a paradox in the way
that this relationship with interest should correlate to positive results however it is revealed
that their ability to retain information and complex instructions is lacking. Differentiation
strategies to be implemented in the classroom could include breaking down tasks into
smaller steps or integrating rich tasks to make the content more relatable to increase
motivation. As an Indigenous man myself I am also concerned with the large amount of
Indigenous students in the class yet many students seem to be disengaged from the learning
process. Addressing this issue of students engaging in off-task behaviour in a high
Indigenous percentage classroom its important to notice the trend and reflect on strategies
that may be applicable and the student group specific. This could include incorporating
more cross curriculum content aspects in the classroom to show to students the effort in
aiming to create an inclusive classroom culture. In doing so this may aim to increase student
engagement as their lack of interest in the content or the way it is delivered is resulting in
limited information retention. Vygotsky’s social constructivists theory that focuses on
culture, family and community and how these factors influence each other can contribute to
one’s education. This is especially important theory to involve in this classroom with a high
number of Indigenous students as culture and community is an integral part in
strengthening a positive relationship with western education.
