ASSIGNMENT 3
BSME 2B 02/26/2021

1. You have begun a small, but growing business. What advantages and disadvantages
should you consider before changing it from a sole proprietorship to a corporation?

 The advantages of keeping the business as a sole proprietorship are that the income
will only be taxed twice, that the owner will be in complete control of the business,
and that there are fewer laws and regulations affect sole proprietorships. The
disadvantages of keeping the business as a sole proprietorship are that the owner
will have full liability for any debts the business incurs, that the owner cannot go to
the public to raise funds via selling equity of the business, and that if the owner dies,
the business will cease to exist.
2. As mentioned in the chapter, information technology touches every aspect of our lives.
Make a detailed study on the information technology available today.
1. Information technology has given business the tools to solve complex problems.
Improved hardware (more memory, faster processors, sharper visual displays, etc) combined

m
with smarter applications (Mindmapping software like X Mind, collaborative software like

er as
Kanban boards, organizers like Google calendar, etc) have made it easier to research data,

co
analyze it, and plan scalability. Many tools available to solve complex problems.

eH w
2. Information technology allows businesses to make better decisions.

o.
rs e
Good decisions in business are based on solid market research. This can be done through
engaging teams through video conferences, reviewing public sentiment on social media and
ou urc
industry forums, and using online surveys to get customer feedback. There are also tools like
Microsoft CRM Dynamics and Google Analytics.
o

3. Information technology has improved marketing.

aC s

Internet marketing using online advertising methods (SEO, PPC, Facebook Ads) are far more
vi y re

accurate ways than traditional marketing of finding target audiences, discovering their needs,
and building a marketing campaign to persuade them to buy. It’s difficult to see how many
people read a newspaper ad. It’s easy to figure out how many people clicked on an online
banner.

4. Information technology has improved customer support.

Customers can receive support from multiple channels telephone, emails, social media
platforms, webinars, and so on. Additionally, customer relationship management systems help
is

businesses understand customer behavior.

Th

5. Information technology has improved resource management.

Cloud computing allows a company’s employees to use any device anywhere in the world to
access their enterprise level software.

3. Under what conditions might each of the following logics of departmentation be

desirable: functional, geographic, customer, product, and process?
 Functional departmentation is common in the small organization, where only one
manager skilled in each function is affordable and is also used at various levels in almost
any organization.

 Geographical departmentation is especially useful to large-scale enterprises whose
activities are widely dispersed.
 Customer departmentation is where the organization’s activities are ready to respond to
and interact with specific customers or customer groups. This organizational form is
used when great emphasis is placed on effectively serving different customer types.
 Product departmentation is very popular in large organization producing different types
of products or offering different types of services. Here product lines are segregated, and
each product line has its own manager. Product departmentation is preferred when
product expansion and diversification, manufacturing and marketing characteristics of
products are of primary concern. This departmentation is used when the product is
relatively complex, and a great deal of capital is required for plant and equipment such
as in automobile industry.
 The process departmentation is applicable in those organizations where production
activities need some distinct process. Especially, this method is used in large scale
manufacturing concerns such as textile, cement, chemical, medicine, etc.

m
4. Chart an organization with which you are familiar that has at least three organizational

er as
levels and identify the number of people reporting to each manager at each level. How do

co
the spans of control at the lowest level compare with those at higher level(s)?

eH w
5. From Question 6-4, select a particular manager and his or her group. Analyze the

o.
difficulty of the manager’s job based on the criteria (subordinate training, nature of jobs
rs e
supervised, etc.) provided in the text. In your opinion, does the manager’s actual span of
ou urc
control reflect the difficulty of that position?
6. Discuss the benefits and limitations of virtual teams as compared to nonvirtual teams.
o

Advantages of Virtual Teams

aC s
vi y re

 Cost savings - The biggest advantage of virtual team enjoyed by an organization is the
associated cost savings. The organization can do away with huge expenses on real
estate, office spaces, utilities bills such as gas, electricity, water etc. and executives’
travel. Many organizations outsource their operations to the low-cost regions. Thus
ed d

production cost also decreases with the reduced raw material cost, operational costs
ar stu

and lower wages of the employees in these geographic locations.

 Leverage Global Talent - Virtual Teams allows organizations to look for talent beyond
their country of origin. This brings together the experts and specialists from across the
globe to work together on the project. Increased knowledge sharing and greater
is

innovation happens as organization’s human capital share their understanding of global

and local markets as well as best business practices.
Th

 Increased Productivity & Higher Profits - Members of virtual teams tend to have
higher focus on the task at hand. As a practice virtual team supports flatter organization
structure. The members do not have to deal with unnecessary bureaucracy which slows
down the decision making. This enhances the productivity which shows as higher profits.
sh

 Reduced Time to Market - Since the members span the time zones, there could be
different team working on the same project 24*7, so when one member sleeps there will
be another one somewhere else who would start work where the former had left. This
shortens the product development time as well as faster response time to demands in
both global and local markets.

 Newer Opportunities - If we see at larger societal level, virtual teams have created
newer opportunities for people who are less mobile and hesitant to relocate due to either
family requirement or physical challenge. Now any task that does not require the
physical presence of a person and which can be supported by communication
technology throws an opportunity for many deserving candidates.

Disadvantages of Virtual Teams

 Cost of Technology - The successful working of virtual team is supported by the

efficient use of multiple communication technologies such as instant messaging, emails
and video-conferencing, among others. No one tool can provide the complete support.
The cost associated with these installation and maintenance tools is little on the higher
side.
 Conflicts, Lack of Trust & Collaboration - The cultural differences between the
members of virtual teams gives rise to number of conflicts. For example, while an
American would write a straightforward email describing a bad situation, this would be
perceived as impolite by a South Asian (say Japanese) member of the team. This would

m
lead to conflicts, mistrust and difficulties in fruitful collaboration which is so vital for the

er as
success of virtual team functioning. These challenges are also precipitated by the

co
absence of non-verbal cues so intrinsic to face-to-face interactions.

eH w
 Social Isolation - Many members of virtual teams are adversely affected by the lack of
physical interactions. Most of the communications in virtual environment is task-oriented.

o.
rs e
In today’s society where job is an important social force for most of us because many of
our workplace colleagues also constitute our close friends, this gives a not-so-good
ou urc
feeling of social isolation. This in turn counter-effects productivity as well as leads to
stress.
o

7. According to the Woodward and Aston studies, what conditions lead to a formalized,
aC s

standardized organizational environment?

vi y re

8. Describe from your experience (or reading) a temporary organization or task force
formed to accomplish some specific purpose. How was it formed, organized, and
ed d

ultimately disbanded?
ar stu

9. Find out the need and importance of computer-based automation for firms.
Increased productivity
is

The manual process of typing (or cutting and pasting) information into documents is inefficient; a
firm can save hours using automation. It also enables small firms to get through more work with
Th

the same amount of staff, reducing labor costs.

Time savings = productivity increase = competitive advantage = greater profitability. Ultimately,
this is the equation that counts!
sh

Reduced risk of error

Document automation greatly reduces the risk of human error, and potentially malpractice suits.
As information comes from a database, the opportunity to mistype or enter the wrong details is
removed.

Greater consistency
Your documents are your brand, particularly in document-intensive practice areas like family law
and real estate. Document automation helps you keep a level of consistency across your forms,
letters and templates; which in turn maintains your professional image.

10. If the development of the information-based organization continues to have the effect
on management predicted by Drucker, what will be the impact on career expectations of
engineers and other specialist professionals?
11. Choose an enterprise with which you are familiar that has undergone significant
recent reorganization. Compare the new and old organizations with regard to (a) size and
influence of specialized staff, (b) management levels, (c) typical spans of control, and (d)
responsibility delegated to nonmanagerial professionals. What other changes occurred
in the reorganization?
12. Discuss the strategy you propose to use in your personal career to assure you will

m
er as
remain in demand in a changing, competitive world.

co
 To remain in demand in a changing and competitive world, I should make myself

eH w
marketable by attending various seminars and trainings that are in lined with that of

o.
technology. I should also focus on something where I can call myself as a master of that
rs e
craft because it is not good that I’m only good at many things but never is the best in the
ou urc
field. Studying for a master’s degree or even for doctor’s degree is also one of my plans
to make myself in demand in the future.
