CAST-RESIN INSULATED BUSWAY SYSTEMS

Review 6 d.d.09.06 Page A1

GENERAL

The busbars have been developed as a modern,

all-purpose means of efficient and safe transmission of elec-
trical energy. They have been in manufacture for more than
thirty-five years.

The system complies with all the requirements for

current ditribution at low and medium voltage.

The busbar consists of copper or aluminium conductors,

embedded in an enclosure of a fire retardant, selfextin-
guishing and homogeneous insulation mix based on epoxy
cast-resin with mineral fillers ensuring high mechanical
strength and chemical withstand.

Standard types are available for current ratings up to 6300 A

and voltage ratings up to 24kV. Systems for higher current
ratings or DC applications are possible.

The busbar line consists of a number of prefabricated

elements. The electrical joining of the conductors is
achieved by means of double fish plates and high tensile
steel bolts.

The junctions and the element ends are overcast with the
same insulation mix as used for the elements. In this way an
integral insulation enclosure to IP68.IK10 is guaranteed over
the full length of the busbar run. Strainght junctions and also
elbow junctions are available each facilitating installation
adjustments of 10-20 mm per standard junction.

L.V.-SYSTEMS

The elements shown on pages L 4 till L 14 form the standardized

series of models for LV- applications.

Because of the existence of many models and the flexible

production methods- all casting mould models allow simple
length variations as well as asymmetrical shapes - together with
the standard straight and elbow junctions, the betobar-r system
can be envisaged easily by project engineers. The potential
length variation of min. 10 mm at each junction ensures the
electro-contractor a fast and safe installation.

Because unlimited dimensional projecting possibilities are not

always required for each connection, the LV- series is divided into
3 groups :

NORM is a series of elements with fixed dimensions.

Element code + N.

VARIO is the series of elements with large shape and

length variations. They are manufactured in
universal casting moulds, the delivery period is
longer than for the norm-series.
Element code + V.

SPECIAL is an unlimited series. The elements are made

in separate casting moulds. This group also
includes those elements, differing from norm
and vario series, but manufactured with exist-
ing casting moulds or combinations thereof.
Price and delivery conditions are given separ-
ately.
Element code + S.

EMP-EMI SCREENING : The group SPECIAL also includes

those versions of the VARIO-series, for which a special screen is
foreseen or will be foreseen by means of adapted casting
moulds.

We advise you to consult Eta-com or your betobar-r agent on

this matter.

We reserve the right to change, at any time and without prior warning the technical specification of any product illustrated in this
catalogue.

NORM
STANDARD TERMINAL ELEMENTS LA LB

Norm - terminal elements CL S phase CL betobar-r

- All norm-terminal elements have fixed dimensions

and a fixed phase sequence.
Shape, length and drillings are fixed and cannot be
changed.

500
- The elements are symmetrical and therefore reversible
for adaptation of the phase sequence (rotation field).

- The elements are deliverable from stock or on extremely

short notice.

300
- Shunts / flexibles have to be adapted on site.

- Centre line of the element always has to be projected/

installed in the centre line of the middle S-phase.

MEDIUM VOLTAGE SYSTEMS

On pages M7 till M13, you find the standardized series

elements for MV-applications.

The large number of element shapes and the compact

dimensions of the system allow the engineer to design
MV-connections in betobar-r as simply as for LV-
versions.

The Eta-com project-engineers work out all MV-busducts

in detail, like connections, wall-bushings, supports.

There are 3 types of MV-systems

3,6 - 7,2 kV type SH

The most compact type, emanating from the Low Voltage
range, needs only supporting insulators in order to be
looked upon as an MV line.

3,6 - 17,5 kV type PH

The more elaborate compact model PH, suited for a maxi-
mum of 17,5 kV. This type can be manufactured with and
without self-supporting screening. The project situation
and the client's demands will be decisive.

3,6 - 24 kV type MH
This type is the only single-pole betobar-r system, thus
helping the flexibility while engineering the specific main
rail systems for this voltage. These lines are supplied with
a self-supporting screening.

Notes :

Up to 10 kV no protective screen has to be provided.

Eta-com advises such a screen for 12 kV and higher
voltage levels in areas with access to public or
unauthorised persons.

For outdoor or equal routings an additional

“weather screen” has to be provided for all systems.

All types can be applied for a lower voltage level than

specified.

A combined application of PH- and MH-type is

possible

We reserve the right to change, at any time and without prior warning the technical specification of any product illustrated in this
catalogue.

GENERAL LOW VOLTAGE / MEDIUM VOLTAGE
DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS

1. IEC standard – Temperature limits

In accordance with the IEC standard the betobar-r nominal rated current are all based on a daily average
ambient temperature of 35ºC with daily peak of 40ºC. For LV the design temperature rise is defined to be 60ºC
for the conductors, at a power frequency of 50Hz, limiting the surface temperature to 90ºC. The MV system is
designed to limit the conductor temperature rise at 50ºC. If the operating conditions are different from the design
values, the maximum permissible load current has to be corrected by the factors in the table on page G2.

2. Weights
The weights of the betobar-r for the LV- types are the average weights as indicated in the tables on pages L1 and L2,
including the junction and the casting mix per system length of 2 m. For MV-types the supporting insulators and any
possible screening is included. If partitions for a full phase segregation are needed, they have to be added as extra
weight.

3. System impedance
The busduct resistance values (DC resistance) Rdc20 are based on a conductor temperature of 20°C and a power
frequency of 50Hz in accordance with the IEC standard. The Rac95 for LV and the Rac85 for MV are the values for
the conductor resistances at max. operating temperature. The reactance values (X) of the LB-types are based on the
standard phase sequence RST-TSR for a 3-phase system.
For other configurations, frequencies or extreme temperatures, please consult Eta-com B or your betobar-r agent.
All impedances have been calculated with physical values :
For copper :
Specific resistance at 20°C = 0.0175 .mm²/m conductivity 57 MS/m
Temperature coefficient = 0.00392 1/°C
Standard EN13601 (2002)

For aluminium :
Specific resistance at 20°C = 0.029 .mm²/m conductivity 35.4 MS/m
Temperature coefficient = 0.004 1/°C
Standard EN755-2 (1997)
4. Maximum voltage
PH series is designed for a maximum voltage of 17.5 kV. Rated voltage 12 kV is provided with self-supporting
safety screen, the called PH..S(creen) system.

5. Short circuit
LV MV Icc values in the technical data
lcw lk Symmetrical short circuit current (1 second effective value if no further indications)
lpk lp Asymmetrical (dynamic) short circuit current (peak value)
The betobar-r busbars type tested reports of the official and independent laboratories (mostly at KEMA and
Laborelec) defines the Icc rating.

For the MH- standard types the following dimensions apply :

For MH1 and MH2 : phase distance = 150 mm and 175 mm for full segregation, support-shoulder distance 600 mm
For MH.D : phase distance = 300 mm, support-shoulder distance 800 mm

Phase distance and support-shoulder distance can be chosen for each project taking into account the production
possibilities. Consult Eta-com or your betobar-r agent on this matter.

8. Voltage drop calculation

Generally long busduct connections have to be checked for voltage drop with the following formula :
D U = 3 x Is x a x L x (Ra.cos j + X.sinj ) x 10-6 V.

whereby : DU = voltage drop (between phases) [Volts]

Is = Normal Full Load Current * [Amps]
a = current distribution factor see graph. below
L = total busduct length [m]
Rac = A.C. Resistance at operating temperature ** [mW /m]
cos j = power factor
X = reactance (mean value) [mW /m]
sin j = reactive factor (= 1 cosj²)
Notes :
* For distribution lines, the max. average load current which can be indicated as a % of the full load has to be used in
this calculation.
** The operating temperature is the sum of the ambient temperature and the temperature rise as a result of the load
current. For critical calculations Ra has to be corrected according to the tables (Ra20 or Ra85).
