Making Family

Making family is a Korean movie directed by Hyun-Seok Kim, and was

released in the year 2016. It is a film that focuses on the funny and inspiring life
story of Tae-bong, a 10-year-old kid, played on screen by Moon Mason, and his
journey on searching for his father. Tae-bong was a smart and talented kid who
is curious to know the person behind the sperm donation responsible for his birth.
Tae-bong was just a kid, yet he seems so independent for he can handle himself
in activities that adults are doing. His mother Mi-Yeon, played by Kim Ha-Nuel, is
a single working mom. They have a single parent family structure.
On the film, Tae-bong always feels that there is something lacking in his life
as a kid, and that is his father. He was aware that his birth became possible
through sperm donation. So he asks the doctor, a good friend of her mother to
give them the information about the man who donated the sperm. The doctor did
not give him the information, but Tae-bong still had access to it because he
hacked the computer in the office. Then, this was the start of the search for his
father.
Tae-bong went to China just to find and know his father. It was very amazing
seeing a kid doing unusual kinds of stuff for his age. Anyways, it was only a film.
When Tae-bong located the address of his technical father Julien, played Aarif
Rahman, he was very happy. Suddenly, Julien kicked him out for he thinks that it
is all a joke. The next day, Tae-bong is still insisting Julien that he is his father.
Then again, Julien kicked him off. I felt pity but inspired by Tae-bong. He is really
just a kid, who is so innocent and unaware of the things happening in his
environment. A few days later, Mi-Yeon found out everything about the situation.
She rapidly packed her bag and flew to China.
The family of Julien decided to have a big family trip in their old hometown.
This is an idea of their great grandmother to make time for her family. She also
planned everything so that Mi-Yeon and Tae-bong will feel like their part of the
family. Another thing is that their grandmother wanted Julien to get back a good
relationship with his father. I would say that this is my favorite part of the movie. I
see Tae-bong so happy for he was able to know more his father and given a
chance to met the whole family. Tae-bong feels like the emptiness becomes full.
Aside from the interesting story of Tae-bong, Julien’s character grabbed my
attention. Julien was an artist who ran away from their home to pursue a career
in the art world. This resulted in a strained family relationship between him and
his father. He was the only son of a wealthy Chinese family who owned a well-
known hotel in China. His father was upset for the name of their family might be
on shame, for Julien’s plagiarism accusation. In the closed end of the film, the art
of Julien impresses his father. It makes him realized that he had imperfections as
a father to Julien. He had spent so much time running a business, where he
forget some of his obligations as a parent. The latter part makes me feel the kind
of love present in a family. It was unconditional and powerful. Julien then proves
to the public that he is impeccable on the controversy. The problem in their family
relationship was resolved.
At the end of the movie, I have learned family is really an important institution
in our society. Away from the fact that it is the basic composition of the society,
family means everything for a human. There, we would have a sense of care,
support, guidance, and love. There is no problem with what kind of family
structure a person has. As long as everyone is happy and no feeling of
emptiness inside, then it is enough. Tae-bong inspires everyone that children
must be held in a good and happy family because they are responsible for
making family/families for the next time periods.
