PREFACE
Vietnam officially became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in
2007 marked a milestone in the development of Vietnam foreign trade. There was
a massive increase in export value of Vietnam’s goods since the event. However,
along with the opportunities came many threats. So what did Vietnam companies
do to deal with all these waves?

The affection of a change in the whole economy is shown very clearly in every
single business trading in it. Viet Delta Corporation is a trading company and its
professional working environment would be a perfect match for my major and
what I wish to study about

Understanding the importance of practical experience in current context of what is

learned and read lag behind for years in comparison to what is actually happening,
the chosen topic is “EXPORT ACTIVITIES IN VIET DELTA CORPORATION”
with three main parts as follows:

- Chapter one: Introduction to Viet delta Corporation

- Chapter two: Current situations of export activities in Viet Delta Corporation

during the period from 2011 to 2013

- Chapter three: The outlook, development orientation and recommendations for

promotion/improvement of export activities in Viet Delta Corporation

I deeply thank Viet Delta Corporation’s managers and staffs, thank Miss Phùng
Minh Đức for your enthusiastic help in fulfilling this mid-course internship report.
Thank Foreign Trade University for creating such a good condition for me to

Despite some constraints in the economy, Viet Delta Corporation’s income

increased throughout the three years from 132.645 million dongs in 2011 up to
140.756 million dongs in 2012, grew 6,1% in comparison with 2011 and reached
154.687 million dongs in 2013, grew 9,9% compared with 2012. This is the result
of product diversification, new customer seeking and strike to raise the company’s
prestige.
The expense increased unstably from 2011 to 2013. In the first two years, there
was a sharp rise from 107.569 million dongs up to 124.456 million dongs, and
then slowed down in 2013 with only 130.409 million dongs, increased 4,8%,
much lower than the rate in 2012 with 15,7%. The reason is from a change in
import department, many employees quit their jobs in 2012 and the company had
to spend more time and money in training new employees, which terribly affected
to the company.
The profit went up and down in this period. It peaked at 18.807million dongs in
2011. This is the most effective in three recent years. In 2012, there were some
drops down in import activities due to some changes in human resource, the
company’s profit declined sharply when income still increased, leading to a
decrease of 39% in comparison with the company’s profit in 2011. The reason for
this is also from some imported consignments were inconsumable, the company’s
partners suffered losses that they could not receive the consignments. The
company had to reduce prices to find customers and this affected to the year’s
profit. In 2013, the profit increased again, but still lower than the 2011 value.
Under the pressure of high competitiveness, the company had no choice but
reduce products which have few suppliers to maintain relationship with old
customers as well as finding new customers. As a result, the profit in 2013 was not
as high as it in 2011.
As a whole, it is clear that the values in general were increasing over the three
years, except for profit. There was a sharp decrease in 2012 due to some reasons
mentioned above.

(Source: Accounting Department)

This is the activity that contributes the most to the company’s income with four
main groups of export products: handicrafts, agricultural products, aquatic
products and industrial products. Because the company chose to focus more in
export, combined with constant seeking for importers of rare and special products
– the area with less competitors, the export value has increased regularly over the
years and always comprised of more or less than 60% of total turnover.
With enthusiastic and friendly staff, contracting is always performed in a very
short time. The company is trying to enhance its range of export products and
looking for new export markets

1.7. Competitiveness of Viet Delta Corporation in the market

1.7.1. Vietnam market

Vietnam export is developing strongly. Many trading companies appear means

that Viet Delta Corporation has to face with more and more competitors trading
the same products, have experience and profuse source of capital such as

Internee: Từ Lương Tiểu My Page 13

Mid-course Internship Report Supervisor: Phùng Minh Đức

Petrolimex, Binh Dinh Company (PiSiCo), Intimex, Vilexim,…Viet Delta

Corporation has capital advantages that help to mobilize sources of commodity in
a short time because the company could pay 80% of contract value in advance for
suppliers domestically. Moreover, some products which are manufactured and
exported by the company have stable quantities and prices. Material speculation is
specially cared and invested so that the company has no worry when material
market prices fluctuate.

1.7.2. International market

Vietnam’s becoming a member of WTO was a chance to impulse many Vietnam

companies to expand to worldwide market. Nevertheless, the competitiveness is
high. There are plenty of exporting companies all over the world with greater
reputation. Some countries such as China, India,.. are famous for their tradition in
handicrafts. Others such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia,.. have perfect climate
conditions for agricultural products. Besides, the inflation in Vietnam raises prices
continuously and unstably. Some of Viet Delta’s competitors are companies with
major reputation and brand on B2B websites and forums. These companies have
great experience in internet and E-commerce

1.8. Tasks done in the internship period

From June 4th to July 4th, every day except for Sundays:

 Posting products’ information and sales on B2B websites

 Negotiating with customers through internet
 Designing the company’s new website about canned food – Viet Delta
company’s new good in the near future

Chapter Two: CURRENT SITUATION OF THE EXPORT ACTIVITIES IN

VIET DELTA COMPANY DURING 2011 - 2013

2.1. The export activities of Viet Delta Company from 2011 to 2013

2.1.1. The export turn-over

Due to the direct export license, Viet Delta Company may export directly, or
concurrently take the mandate to export for other companies

The result of Viet Delta’s export activities in 3 recent years shows some good
points:

Table 2.1 Export turnover from 2011 to 2013

Unit: USD

Year Value Growth rate (%)

2011 3.487.990

2012 3.894.245 11,65%

2013 4.213.586 8,2%

(Source: Accounting Department)

Due to Viet Delta’s strike to raise the company’s prestige, product diversification
and new customer seeking, the export turn-over gradually rose from 3.487.990
USD in 2011 up to 3.894.245 USD in 2012 and reached 4.213.586 USD in 2013.
Viet Delta Corporation’s export turn-over has increased well throughout the years
with the growth rate was 11,65%, accounting for 406.225USD in 2012 and 8,2%,
accounting for 319.341USD in 2013. Because the company has attached special
importance to export, the export value rose regularly through the years, and in
2013, the export value augmented to more than 4 million USD for the very first

time, which was a positive signal in export activities of the company, showing that
Viet Delta Company’s prestige has been raised significantly.

over

(Source: Export Department)

Overall, all main export products increased, except aquatic products. In the latest
two years, both export values of handicraft and agricultural products were more
than 1 million USD each year, which contributed mostly to the company’s total
turnover

The export value of handicraft was quite stable with over 1 million USD each
year. In 2012, the export value was 1.386.948USD, increased 291.081USD in
comparison with the same period of the previous year and the density of
handicrafts in total turnover rose 4,2%. However, in 2013, due to some difficulties

Internee: Từ Lương Tiểu My Page 16

Mid-course Internship Report Supervisor: Phùng Minh Đức

in exporting handicraft, there was a slight drop in density from 35,6% down to
30,5%

Agricultural products play an increasingly important role in the company’s export

products. The export value of the article rose continuously throughout the years.
There was an obviously sharp rise in this area from 925.383USD in 2011 up to
1.583.726USD in 2012 and 1.867.335USD in 2013. The density increased
dramatically from 26,5% in 2011 up to 44,3% in 2013. The reasons are the
company decided to focus more on agricultural products, especially rare or strange
products so that they will not face with many competitors and this area has
became the most important in the product structure.

In recent years, the export value of aquatic products diminished from the peak of
625.838USD in 2011 to 324.864USD in 2013, the density reduced steeply from
17,9% down to 9,7% because in 2012, the prices of aquatic products in worldwide
market decreased significantly, leading many difficulties in exporting.

In the situation of extreme competitiveness with other foreign and domestic

companies, Viet Delta Corporation has chosen to orient in strange or rare products
that competitors do not export or produce in order to compete with many
companies focusing on general products with stable sources and prices. Namely,
in aquatic products, the company tent to export holothurians, seaweed… instead of
shrimps, fish, octopus,… Or in agricultural products, beside supplying pure starch,
denatured starch,… the company also supply fresh or dried cassava leaf, batata
starch, arrow-root starch,…which were of little suppliers in the market.

turnover

(Source: Export Department)

The export values in different markets were unstably changing. EU is deemed to

be the main export market. The export value to EU was growing gradually
throughout the years, from 895.865USD in 2011 up to 986.428USD and climbed
to more than 1 million USD in 2013. The densities in this area in the three years
were always more than 25%, proving that EU is a stable market and the company
has maintained very well business relations with loyal customers in EU

The Middle East is a stably growing market. In 2012, the export value was
883.734USD, increasing more than 158.051USD in comparison with the same
period in 2011, the growth rate was 21,78%. In 2013, the growth rate decreased
down to 9,46%, which means the value increased only 83.611USD,

South Africa is an unstable market. It is clear that in 2011, the export value to this
market reached 625.838USD, accounting for 17,9% in total turnover.

Internee: Từ Lương Tiểu My Page 18

Mid-course Internship Report Supervisor: Phùng Minh Đức

Nevertheless, this figure steeply depleted to only more than 9%. When it came to
2013, the turnover went up again and stopped at 724.34USD or 17,2% in density.
The up and down are because most customers only ordered for the purpose of
seeking information, there were not many long-term or periodical orders.

The other countries are mostly in Asia such as China, Japan, Philippine, Korea,...
As a whole, the export turnover of this area was increasing regularly every year. In
2011, the export value was 1.240.604USD, in 2012 it was 1.658.736USD,
augmented to 42,6% in density. However, in 2013, as a result of a considerable
rise in world-wide supply sources, a slight drop took place in demands and export
value to China, the turnover reached only 1.407.323USD, comprising of only
33,3% in total turnover.

2.2. Summary of strengths and weaknesses

2.2.1. Strengths
In Viet Delta Corporation, every foreign trade employee is responsible for one
specific product. Therefore, they have a thorough grasp of the products when
exporting to different markets and time for negotiating or bargaining and
preparing payment document is shortened considerably.
The young staff has ability to acquire new knowledge and deal with changes.
There is mobilizing staff in charge of buying domestic products or negotiating
with and building good relationships with domestic manufacturers and sellers to
help get the best price in a short time and get new information about products from
manufacturers very soon.
The experience of 10 years doing the business and diversified sources of products
are a guarantee for Viet Delta’s prestige. Most employees have experience to
handle troubles caused when doing the business. Each person is aware of team
work spirit and cooperates with others very well, helping to save time and money
when performing contracts
The company has built wide and long-term relationships with banks, state-owned
companies,... which is a good financial support for running the business.

Internee: Từ Lương Tiểu My Page 19

Mid-course Internship Report Supervisor: Phùng Minh Đức

With profuse source of capital, the company could supply large quantity of
products according to major orders’ requirements. Some products manufactured
and exported by Viet Delta have stable prices. Therefore, when market prices go
down, the company will be able to mobilize material for manufacturing, and when
market prices go up, it is not hasty to buy material.
The company focuses on diversifying products with less competitors so that they
could widen their market and seek new customers.
Locating near the center of Ho Chi Minh City is also an advantage for the
company in meeting foreign partners and trading
E-commerce is used to the fullest in trading, therefore, time and cost for such
activities are reduced, and the company can offer more competitive prices for
customers
Last but not least is being proactive in business with a wide and still expanding
range of products. For this reason, in lean years or when prices are not
competitive, there are still many other products for replacement.
2.2.2. Weaknesses
Due to some practical conditions, Viet Delta Corporation has not had its own
factory for manufacturing. As a trading company, the main activities in Viet Delta
is buying and reselling. Therefore, the prices are not very competitive and the
business depends a lot on manufacturers, product quality is not closely controlled
sometimes
The company has no specific long-term export strategy, there are only moderate
and small orders from 15 to 300 tons, seasonal delivery, with not many long-term
customers
In Viet Delta Company, there are usually exchanges between the import and
export department. In 2012, there was a problem with human resource in import
department, so many employees quit leads to some cost and time for training
newly inexperienced employees.
The company lacks of a marketing team responsible for market and customers’
demand research. Marketing activities are not very effective, hence the company

Internee: Từ Lương Tiểu My Page 20

Mid-course Internship Report Supervisor: Phùng Minh Đức

still cannot penetrate to many potential markets. There has been no product
introduction program, no participation on the International Agricultural product
Fair to broadcast its products and image to more customers, no registration in B2B
websites to gain more information
Payment is only accepted by L/C (Letter of credit) or T/T (Telepraphic transfer) to
ensure safety, passing by many customers who preferred other payment methods
such as CAD (Cash against documents), D/P (Documents against payment),...
Young and inexperienced staff could not fulfill the business the most precisely and
effectively. Although all employees are fluent in English, the expansion in export
market requires more than one foreign language when negotiating with customers
in Japan, China,…

Chapter Three: THE OUTLOOK, DEVELOPMENT ORIENTATION AND

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PROMOTION/IMPROVEMENT OF
EXPORT ECTIVITIES IN VIET DELTA COMPANY

3.1. The outlook of the export activities in Viet Delta Company

3.1.1. Opportunities

Using internet as main tool to search for customers and promote the company’s
image has opened a huge expanding market with various customers’ groups in all
kind of products, from which there are many opportunities to boost exports to
global market and eliminate trade barriers and economic borders
The development of science and technology enables the company to select the
most appropriate technology, the most effective contribution to improving
competitiveness in the market
Expanding operating environment helps to take advantage of favorable conditions
in domestic and international level to develop international marketing strategies
more effectively.
International Marketing has many advantages to promote and put application in
many areas such as marketing in merchandise exports, marketing in services,
marketing in business investment… The company will accumulate more
experience in the organizational management, market research and strategic
planning, especially experience in building international marketing-mix strategy.

3.1.2. Threats

Coming along with Vietnam’s membership of WTO is higher competitiveness.

The company currently has to face with many competitors when trading with
customers all over the world. There are many competitors in the world with same
products but greater reputation in quality and quantity
Many other companies with bigger reputation and brand also joined B2B websites
and they have more experience on the internet
Market challenges are more acute. Due to increase in production, supply tends to
exceed demand. Thus, the demand of the market is, especially in the developed

world, increasingly more strict and stringent. The first requirement is quality of
product. But today, along with quality, customers also require products to achieve
low cost, reasonable price, perfect service, accurate delivery period and
convenient distribution channels,…
Even with 10 years experience in trading, the company still has very little
information about customers coming from markets or countries that the company
seldom trades with such as South America,..
3.2. The company’s development orientation of the export activities in 2014-
2020
In the situation that the worldwide economy is rehabilitating and Vietnam
economy is becoming less dull. The company has development orientations as
follows:

Russia, East Europe.
 Maintain business relationships with long-term partners exploit the internet’s
potential to the fullest in order to find new customers

service quality in the company’s own stores (Binh Trieu Store, An Suong
Store,…)
 Continue to develop kinds of products which are in trading

prestige and brand
 Find more sources inside and outside the country and export products with
lower price but the same quality

3.3. Recommendations for promoting/improving the export activities in Viet

Delta Corporation
A factory is planned to be built in the future so that the company could offer better
prices for customers and raise its competitiveness. However, right now the
company still has to buy and resell for export, so they need a separate team dealing
with finding new and trustful suppliers, maintain good relationships with local
farmers and long-term partners
Viet Delta Company needs some strategy such as preferential treatments for
customers which will help to keep long-term customers and continuous
improvement in operating process to gain customer’s trust
There should be some periodical meeting in which employees can raise their voice
and people who have considerable contribution should be rewarded so there would
not be so many quitters in a short time like in 2012
The company needs a marketing department in charge of market research, design
to determine customers’ demands and tastes. Update regularly product information
in B2B websites or social network, upgrade and develop websites to impress and
draw customers’ attention when they visit.
Improving professional proficiency and gaining experience and information about
different markets, countries’ customs also help the company to be more confident
in transacting in other payment terms apart from L/C or T/T and reach more
customers
Managers and staff should always improve professional skills, acquire new
knowledge and technology, encourage each person to have business project,
integrate community purpose into personal target, raise everybody’s responsibility
and train, improve business ability requirements, languages and professional skills
regularly to help employees more confident in solving problems. The staff’s
ability should be examined and evaluated usually in order to bring out specific and
suitable support methods for employees to develop themselves
