STANDARD

DEVIATION OF
UNGROUPED DATA
Calculate the standard deviation of the given score in a math exam:
19,23,15,7,22,27,17,31,35, and 34.

These are the steps to be followed in calculating standard deviation:

Step 1: Find the mean

To find the mean add all scores, then divide it to the number of items.

Mean = Total
No. of items

= 19+23+15+7+22+27+17+31+35+34
10

= 230
10

Mean = 23

Step 2: Construct a table of values

To determine the deviation(d) subtract mean from the score (score-mean).

To determine the squared deviation(d2) multiply the deviation(d) by itself.
To determine the d2 add all  squared deviation(d2).

Mean = 23
x d d2
(scores) (deviation) (squared
deviation)
19 -4 16
23 0 0
15 -8 64
7 -16 256
22 -1 1
27 4 16
17 -6 36
31 8 64
35 12 144
34 11 121
2
∑d =718

Step 3: Substitute the formula to get standard deviation of ungrouped data.

To get the standard deviation, first, divide ∑d2 and no. of items. Second, find the
square root of the quotient.

S=√ ∑d2
No. of items

= √ 718
10

=√71.8

S= 8.47
