Problem and solution text structure describes a problem and discusses possible
solutions to the problem.

The key structure or signal questions are:

 What is the problem?
 Why is this a problem?
 Is anything being done to try to solve the problem?
 What can be done to solve the problem?

Some of the language features or signal words used are:

 Question is…
 Dilemma is…
 The puzzle is…
 To solve this…
 One answer is…
 One reason for the problem is.

Information using problem and solution may be presented

Problem Solution
Now let us go back to the passage Keeping Safe under the Sun. Let us answer
the following questions.

a. What are the signal words used in the passage? Box the signal words.
(Pupil will use laptop .Drag the box to the word)
b. What is the problem ?
c. What are the given solutions to the problem?
d. Present a graphic organizer for the passage. Ask a pupil to do it on the
board.

C. Engagement Differentiated Activities

( Group Activity)
The teacher will divide the class into three groups. Each group will be given a
task according to their level of development and learning.
Group Activity 1: Read the passage then identify the signal words , problem and
solution and present it using a graphic organizer. Write it on the manila paper
provided (Covid 19)

In January 2020, scientists announced that a new coronavirus,

SARS-CoV-2, was responsible for an outbreak of respiratory disease
and pneumonia in Wuhan, China. Since then, the novel coronavirus has
spread around the world, sickening more than 100 million people.

The question is if COVID-19 is spreading in your community what

should we do? To solve this, the Department of Health advised people
to stay safe by taking some simple precautions, such as physical
distancing, wearing a mask, keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding
crowds, cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue.
Check local advice where you live and work. Another answer is that
people should get the COVID 19 vaccine.

Group Activity 2 Read the passage, identify the problem and solution then
present a News Broadcast . Use appropriate signal words . Taal Volcano

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology

(Phivolcs) raised the status of Taal Volcano in Batangas from Alert
Level 1 to Alert Level 2 on Tuesday morning, March 9.

Alert Level 2 was raised due to "increasing unrest," coming

from Alert Level 1's "low level of unrest."

This means that there is probable magmatic activity that may or

may not lead to an eruption," Phivolcs said in an advisory issued 8
am on Tuesday.

"At Alert Level 2, evacuation is not yet recommended. However,

the public is reminded that Taal Volcano Island is a Permanent
Danger Zone and that entry into TVI, especially the vicinities of the
Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, must remain strictly
prohibited," warned the agency.
Group Activity 3 Read the passage, discuss the problem with your groups
and give solutions and act out the situation.

Online game addiction is a common problem among children your

age. The dilemma is that they get so hooked with playing that at
times, they tend to prioritize it over their studies, helping with house
chores, and spending quality time with family members.

Generalization
What are the key structure and features of a problem and solution text type?

Assessment
Read the passage. Make a graphic organizer to show problem and solution.

Deforestation means cutting down trees in large scale. Today it has

become a global problem. This problem is increasing day by day. There are
many causes of deforestation. Population explosion is the main cause of
deforestation. People use wood in different purposes. They make their

Give a thumbs up if you understood well or thumbs down if you did not fully
understand the lesson.

Keeping Safe in Summer

Life on earth could not exist without theheat and light from ou sun. But too
much time spent under the sun can be hazardous. The reason for this dilemma is
directly linked to invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Too many hours of exposure to the UV Index and Sunburn
sun’s UV rays can lead to skin cancer. Risk in Summer
Fortunately, UV data is readily UV Index Burn Likely
available. You can learn the day’s UV After
index from online weather sites, daily 11+ 10 min.
newspapers and TV weather reports. 8-10 15 min

Dermatologists understand the dangers

of radiation and stress that everyone should guard against it0-2
all year long. But, as the
60 min
chart shows, the dangers of the exposure are greatest during the summer months-
when UV levels are the highest. So that we must be vigilant.
To remedy the problem. Dermatologists recommend applying sunscreen
frequently when you are outdoors in summer. They added that you should wear wide-
brim hats, sunglasses and clothing that covers your arms and legs, use an umbrella.
