Sekercioglu, et al. (2002) sampled birds, bird diets, and invertebrates in Las Cruces
Forest in southern Costa Rica and in nearby forest fragments (8 o47’N, 82o57’W) between
July 1, 1999 and September 15 2000. A total of six (6) 200-m study transects were used;
three (3) were used in the Las Cruces Forest separated 400-1000m apart because it was the
largest fragment in the area (227 hectares); To control for “edge effects” the other three (3)
were each placed within 150m of the forest edge of 3 smaller isolated fragments 400-2300m
away from Las Cruces Forest. Since the 1950s, these Pacific premontane forest fragments
(elevation 1100m) were isolated, so pastures, plantations, and houses are apparent between
