Sekercioglu, et al. (2002) sampled birds, bird diets, and invertebrates in Las Cruces

Forest in southern Costa Rica and in nearby forest fragments (8 o47’N, 82o57’W) between

July 1, 1999 and September 15 2000. A total of six (6) 200-m study transects were used;

three (3) were used in the Las Cruces Forest separated 400-1000m apart because it was the

largest fragment in the area (227 hectares); To control for “edge effects” the other three (3)

were each placed within 150m of the forest edge of 3 smaller isolated fragments 400-2300m

away from Las Cruces Forest. Since the 1950s, these Pacific premontane forest fragments

(elevation 1100m) were isolated, so pastures, plantations, and houses are apparent between

each small and large fragments.
