Worksheet 5

Fun with the Periodic Table

COMPETENCIES
CRS-Ch-6b. Identify periods and groups, noble gases, metals, non-metals and metalloids.
CRS-Ch-6c. Recognize the block diagram of the periodic table and identify the representative elements, the
transition elements, and inner transition elements.

INSTRUCTIONS: Save your answered worksheet as a PDF file with the file name “Section-Family Name-
PerTable”. Submit the PDF file in Moodle.

A. Fun with Colors (11 points)

In this section, you will see the connections between the properties and classifications of the
elements in the periodic table. Using the periodic table below color the periodic table as follows:

1. Color the square for Hydrogen pink.

2. Lightly color all metals yellow.
3. Place black dots in the squares of all alkali metals.
4. Draw a horizontal line across each box in the group of alkaline earth metals.
5. Draw a diagonal line across each box of all transition metals.
6. Color the metalloids purple.
7. Color the nonmetals orange.
8. Draw small brown circles in each box of the halogens.
9. Draw checkerboard lines through all the boxes of the noble gases.
10. Color all the lanthanides red.
11. Color all the actinides green.
B. Label the Periodic Table (9 points)
The logical organization of the periodic table can be easily understood if you try to remember patterns
of the properties of these elements. One way to understand this is to create models. In this activity
label the periodic table below. Refer to the instructions below.

1. Label the groups with 1-18 at the top of each column.

2. Label the periods with 1-7 at the left of each row.
3. Using a dark color, draw a zig-zag diagonal staircase that divides the metals from the nonmetals (to
the left of B; between B & Al; between Al & Si; between Si & Ge; between Ge & As; between As &
Sb; between Sb & Te; between Te & Po; between Po & At).
4. Label the Representative Elements with roman numerals IA – VIIIA at the top of each column.
5. Label the area of transition metals as “transition metals”.
6. Label the area of inner transition metals as “inner transition metals” or “rare earth metals”.
7. Label the area of lanthanide series elements as “lanthanides”.
8. Label the area of actinide series elements as “actinides”.
9. Place an asterisk * inside the boxes of elements 57 and 89 to show where the lanthanides and
actinides are actually located in the periodic table.
C. Rare Earth Metals (12 points)
Refer to the list of rare earth metals mentioned in the article (see link below). Select one rare earth
metal that looks most interesting to you. Answer the question: What are two (2) specific applications,
technologies or inventions that make use of the rare earth metal? For each answer, identify two
credible, trustworthy online references, and provide the links to the references. For each reference,
write 1-2 sentences describing or summarizing the information in the reference that supports the rare
earth application, technology or invention. Use the table below for your answers.
