Demya Family is a typical nuclear type of family that consist of the father, Mr. Marco Demya who
is a garbage collector, Mrs. Pan Demya, a “Labandera”, and their nine children, Agapito who is 26
years old, Lea who is 24 years old, Lance who is 20 years old, Cassy who is 16 years old, Maria
who is 12 years old, Niel who is 9 years old, Leandro who is 7 years old, Faith who is 4 years old,
and Honey who is 3 years old. Mrs. Pan Demya is currently 6 months pregnant and is expected to
give birth on the last week of December.

The father is the head and breadwinner of the family but Mrs. Demya also works as a “Labandera”
to help with the expenses. Mr. Marco is an alcoholic and back the, Mr. and Mrs. Demya often
quarrel because of this. Both Mr. and Mrs. Demya are having a hard time taking care and
monitoring their children because both of them are busy with work and they have too many
children. Even though Mrs. Pan only works three times a week, she still can’t have time to take
care of her children because of her pregnancy. Maria, the 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Demya is often the one being left to tend her other younger siblings when her mother does
laundry in the neighborhood. She is also the one who was trained to cook and clean the house
and feed her younger siblings. The family’s communication and interaction with each other seems
erratic because everyone is busy doing their own things to do.

B. SOCIO-ECONOMIC and CULTURAL CHARACTERISTIC

Mr. Marco works as a garbage collector and earns 500 per day. On the other hand, Mrs. Pan who
only finished elementary, works as a “labandera” three times a week and earns 300 per day. The
eldest child, Agapito, is an Out -of -School youth who stopped schooling during his 2 nd year in high
school. He helps his parents by selling bottles and scrap metals. Lea, the second child is also an
out-of-school youth. Lance, the third eldest, is a second year University scholar at Central
Mindanao University and also works part-time in a nearby carenderia to help sustain his studies
and to also help in their home expenses. Cassy, the fourth child is a Grade 10 student at
Bukidnon National School of Home Industries. Maria, the fifth child is a grade 6 student at
Maramag Central Elementary School and niel, the sixth child is a grade 4 student also at MCES.

Mrs. Demya is also a member of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program of the 4Ps. The 4Ps
offers 6,000 pesos annually (P500 per month) for each household selected by the program for health
and nutrition expenses. Also, it provides 3000 pesos per child for one school year or 300 pesos per
month for educational expense.

Mr. and Mrs. Demya’s monthly income is approximately P9,000 per month excluding the 4Ps
allowance which is barely enough to sustain their nine children, pay water bills, and electricity bills.
They don’t have any budget for health maintenance and it is not prioritized due to the lack of
money.

rooms and is made up of light materials. The dimensions of each room are 3 meters by 3
meters.
B. Sleeping arrangement
The Demya family only have two rooms which is not enough for 10 people to sleep in.
Cassy, the fourth child, is often not at home and sleepovers at her boyfriend’s house
frequently.
C. Presence of breeding or resting sites of vectors of diseases -(e.g. mosquitoes, roaches, flies,
rodents, etc.)
There is a presence of breeding sites for mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, and rodents.
Their surrounding is unhygienic which is prone for pests to live in. There is also a stagnant
water outside their house which is a possible breeding site for mosquitos.
D. Presence of accidental hazard
There are broken pieces of alcohol bottles at the front lawn of their house. There are also
scattered wood with stuck nails. These can injure the little children such as honey, faith,
Leandro, niel, and maria especially because there are usually no adults that watch over
them. Their house doesn’t have a stable foundation and it can possibly collapse anytime.
Maria, the fifth child who is only 12 years old, a child, is left to do the household chores
such as cooking which can be dangerous.
E. Food storage and cooking facilities
They have a small screened cabinet for cooking purposes. They use a washing sink
outside their house just beside the toilet which has no proper drainage pipe attached and
the water from the sink is draining into a water pail. Their cooking utensils are on the floor
and they cook near the toilet that doesn’t have a door.
F. Water supply - source, ownership, sanitary condition
The children fetch water from a public artesian well about half kilometer from the house
because they do not have their own water supply. They use an earthen jar with cover for
drinking water supply.
G. Toilet facilities - type, ownership, sanitary condition
They use an unsanitary water-sealed toilet, which is being shared with their neighbor,
without a door and faucet, foul smelling, and with plenty of flies all over.
H. Garbage/refuse disposal - type, sanitary condition
They throw their garbage in an open pit situated at the back of the house two meters away
which also has plenty of flies.
