What can you do to appear professional when a potential employer contacts you by

phone for a screening interview or to schedule a job interview?

If you are in the process of looking for employment, you should be prepared at all times
because you never know when a potential employer will contact you by phone. The best way to
be prepared and appear professional when this happens is to make sure you take your phone
calls in a quiet room alone, so there will be no interruptions. Your voice should sound clear, and
enthusiastic. It wouldn’t hurt to have pen and paper handy in this room with you so that you can
take down any pertinent information. When taking down this information, you should make sure
to verify what you have written down.

Preparing this way will help you sound confident and ready over the phone. In addition,
the preparation of your voice being clear, concise and enthusiasm will help the interviewer
remember you and they will look forward to meeting you.

In the past when I have job searched, I was required to attend a job search workshop.

m
The workshop consisted of daily classes that taught us how to interview, by doing mock

er as
interviewing, we were taught how to dress professionally, and we all were required to do our

co
resumes. Although, at first I felt this workshop was unnecessary, it actually was invaluable to my

character and job readiness.

Why do you think so many employers search for information about job applicants online
ou urc
using Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other online tools? Do you think these kinds of
searches are ethical or appropriate? Give a detailed explanation.
o

Apparently, many employers tend to search for information about job applicants online
aC s

using various user sights. I don’t think it’s necessary for employers to do this kind of background
vi y re

check. Most employers already do some kind of criminal background check, and drug testing. If
these two checks come back satisfactory for the employer, then it should be enough to help
make the decision to hire the candidate. When an employer uses user profile websites in the
hiring decision for job candidate, it doesn’t seem fair because the information could be out of
ed d

date, or used for other purposes for that individual personal life.

These kinds of searches aren’t ethical or appropriate because there is so much room for
error for everyone involved. For example, for a potential employer to go online is not fair
because the candidate may not have been prepared for them to see what they may find. The
is

right thing to do would be for the employer to maybe warn the job candidate that they use social
Th

media to help in their decision making process. In my opinion, if job candidate are prepared and
the playing field is level, it could make for competition among job candidates, which the
employers could benefit from. Ultimately, being prepared is very important and will make
sh

positive difference for a job candidate. Just as the employer is prepared when a candidate
comes for the interview, so should the job candidate have the same opportunity, this will create
a level playing field.

Do you think behavioral questions, such as “Tell me about a business problem you had
and how you solved it,” are more effective than traditional questions, such as “Tell me
what you are good at.”? Why?

Behavioral questions are more effective than traditional questions, because this can give
the interviewer insight on the candidate’s background in business. This will also force the
candidate to understand what’s important to the potential employer. When a job candidate and
an interviewer communicate during an interview, there are so many possibilities of what kinds of
questions that could be answered and so many answers that could follow. However, it is safe to
say that since neither individual knows what’s to come, what is communicated between the two
should leave a positive impression on all parties involved.

When asked about his previous salary in a job interview, Jeremy boosts his salary a bit.
He reasons that he was about to get a raise and he also felt that he deserved to be paid
more than he was actually earning. Even his supervisor said that he was worth more than
his salary. Is Jeremy justified in inflating his previous salary? Describe in detail your

m

assessment.

co
Being untrue about your salary is unethical. This can only hurt an individual’s chances

eH w
for employment. If the potential employer decides to verify the job candidate’s salary from their

o.
previous employer then this could negatively affect his or her chance of being hired. There are
rs e
so many other alternatives to voice besides telling untruths about your salary. If I were in the
ou urc
sort of situation, I would explain to the potential employer that although I felt a little disappointed
with my salary, I really liked the organization, the position I knew I would enjoy doing and for me
that was more important than the salary. Putting a positive spin on difficult situations will show
o

that your interviewer that your flexible, motivated and positive. These are some character traits
aC s

that most employees would be happy to have in a candidate.
