Module 1i: Energy Conversion

After going over these readings you will be able to:
1. Figure out energy conversion
2. Identify the different energy conversion devices
3. Explain an energy conversion example
4. Maximize energy conversion in areas of application
Energy conversion
Energy conversion is the transformation or the process of changing one form of energy into
another. This transformation depends upon the need of the receiving: a light bulb for example
converts electric energy into light energy with very clear reason: we need to see in the dark rather
than keeping electrical energy that we do not need when light is important. The electric fan for
example converts electrical energy into wind energy for some practical reasons. The solar PV
converts the solar irradiation of the sun into electrical energy and classify them as renewables.
These and other examples can illustrate to us clearly what is the true meaning of energy
conversion.
For a particular energy conversion example, the process is not very simple, as expected it goes
through a process that is definite that events accounting is possible. Ferrying a pail of water over
a truck through kilometers of highways for example, one will not expect that the volume of the
water will measure the same from the sending end into receiving end. Some of the water will be
lost from spillage or some will be lost due to evaporation or from both. The measure of the water:
in the receiving end over the sending end measures how good the transfer has been. In our case
we call this efficiency.
Energy conversion devices operates like the water ferrying example and the water spillage and
evaporation are called losses. Efficiency therefore states that not all of the energy input are to be
expected to reach the output, some will be lost along the process that makes efficiency always
lesser then 100 percent.
From all of the above-mentioned examples we can say that we can improve efficiency by reducing
the losses. Maximum efficiency of any energy conversion is quite desirable. As future technical
people we will be responsible in making energy conversion as its best.

Activity 1: Energy Conversion

1. What is efficiency?
Efficiency is the ability to measure or avoid wasting materials and time doing something that may
produce desired results. It only focuses on quality and the disposal of waste. Making substantial use of
existing resources is what efficiency is all about. In energy, efficiency can use to maintain the same level
of energy service. For example, we can allow a building to use less heating and cooling energy by
isolating it to maintain a comfortable temperature.

2. Mention at least 5 other energy conversion examples that happens man’s everyday life

Energy conversion is when energy can move from one place to another. In our body, we can use
food to convert chemical energy into mechanical energy to gain movement. When people listening to
music using earphones, the sound energy of the music converts into mechanical energy to your
eardrum. Also, whenever we use an electric fan, it converts electrical energy into kinetic energy. When
gasoline is used in a vehicle engine, it produces chemical energy to convert into heat (mechanical
energy) to make the car move. Another example is when turning on a light switch, the mechanical
energy is converted into electrical energy.

3. In all of the examples listed in number 2 illustrate how to improve efficiency.

4. Present an example that illustrates efficiency.

We utilize energy for transportation, heating and cooling buildings, industry, and many more. Energy
efficiency means using less energy, reduce cost and improve quality of life. We can conserve energy in a
variety of ways. For example, turning off the light and unplugging appliances when they are not in use.
Change appliances that can save more energy and walk instead of driving. Using energy more efficiently
is the best way to save more money and lessen the problem of our environment.
