Reproduction in Plants

Why do living things reproduce

• Ensure continuity of their kind

• Pass on their characteristics to their young

Parts of a Flowering Plant
Stigma
• Receive pollen grain
Anther Style
• Contains pollen grain
Stigma
• Support the anther Ovary
Ovule
• Contains egg cells

Germination

Seed Dispersal Pollination

Fertilisation

Pollination

• Transfer of pollen grain from the anther to the stigma

Pollination
Animal Wind

• Sweet smell • Anther hang outwards

• Large and brightly coloured • Small and dull coloured

Fertilisation

1. Pollen grain lands on the stigma and

produce a pollen tube

2. Tube will grow down from the style to

the ovary. Ovule is found within the ovary
and each ovule contains an egg cell

3. The pollen grain will fuse with the egg

cell

Fertilisation

• Fusion of the pollen grain and egg cell

• Ovary will develop into a fruit
• Ovules will develop into seeds

Seed Dispersal

• Prevent overcrowding
• Reduce competition for sunlight, nutrients and water

Overcrowding causes plants to grow

• Tall
• Thin

Characteristics
• Pod-like structure

Germination

• After seeds are dispersed, they develop into young plants.

This is known as germination
• Requires Water, Oxygen and Warmth

Germination
1. Roots grow first
2. At this stage, the baby plant cannot make its own food and
gets its nutrients from the food stored in the seed leaves

3. Shoot grows next
