A subject that is concerned with how information spreads and influences politics
and policy makers, the news media and citizens. Since the advent of the World Wide
Web, the amount of data to analyze has exploded, and researchers are shifting to
computational methods to study the dynamics of political communication. In recent
years, machine learning, natural language processing, and network analysis have
become key tools in the subfield. It deals with the production, dissemination, procession
and effects of information, both through mass media and interpersonally, within a
political context. This includes the study of the media, the analysis of speeches by
politicians and those that are trying to influence the political process, and formal and
informal conversations among members of the public, among other aspects. The media
acts as bridge between government and public. Political communication can be defined
as the connection concerning politics and citizens and the interaction modes that
connect these groups to each other.
This course looks at how power, ethics, and accountability are actually used in
the public sector. It goes through the causes of corruption as well as the institutions and
strategies that can be used to enhance accountability and fight corruption. With the use
of a framework and a model for ethical decision-making, it teaches students how to
recognize, articulate, and navigate ethical challenges in the workplace.
This course provides theoretical tools and analytical frameworks that allow a
better understanding of the international system. Students are exposed to the historical
development of and contemporary issues in international relations, including the
formation and emergence of states, foreign policy-making, international conflict and
cooperation, and the roles of international organizations and non-state actors in the
international system.
This course aims to deepen the understanding of students of both the Southeast
Asian region and some of the core concerns in the study of politics. The first is
accomplished through a critical examination of the political systems in the different
countries in Southeast Asia. The second is developed through the generation of
theoretical insights emerging from a comparative study of these political systems. Aside
from the domestic politics, the course also covers a critical analysis of political,
economic and social ties among countries in the region.
