Should humanities be taught in the university or not? First and foremost, what is humanities?
According to the Ohio Humanities Council (1997) the humanities are the myths, thoughts and
vocabulary that make our lives and our world interesting. The humanities expose us to people we
have never met, places we have never been, and ideas we have never seen before. By seeing how
people have lived and learned about life, the humanities allow us to determine what is important
about our lives and what we should do to make them better. By linking us to others, they point
the way to answers about what is right or wrong, or what is true about our heritage and our past.
Humanities enable us to resolve the problems that we face together in our families, our societies
and as a country.
To answer the question of whether I agree or not to teach the humanities in university, my
stand is I agree because humanities teach essential thought and reasoning skills, including
imaginative thinking, logical thinking, reasoning, strong inquiry, intuition, cynical weighting of
facts, and perspective. Humanities also talk about the world in which we live and about our own
society, as well as all other civilizations in the world, and their ideals and contributions to the
environment. Global languages are part of humanities and offer the most effective method to
connect with people in other cultures and to develop an understanding of the distinctions
between nations. Philosophy and ethics are part of the sciences, and they keep asking us crucial
questions that prevent us from crossing moral barriers in politics, research, and life in general.
According to Dalbert (2011) the reason why humanity should be taught at university first is
“Students can benefit from advice on which courses to take.” Without the advantage of
experience or guidance, students want to take a course. Abstract will make bad choices. Students
do this in certain ways you do not know the worth of a certain course right after they have
completed it. Providing this guidance is the role of one's advisor or tutor, who may talk with
experience about the importance and effectiveness of specific courses.
Your experience is also broadened by a degree in humanities. You will be able to use your
analytical and imaginative thinking skills to dissect the steps that have been taken to create a
world-famous sculpture or painting. In this case, the degree of morality is less about you and
more about the capacity to acknowledge the hard work of another person’s hard work. Being
willing to enjoy a decent career, both in your work and personal life, is a special privilege. Steve
Jobs, for example, is well known to have been very precise about design features. He studied
calligraphy at school and acquired appreciation for typography. This enthusiasm influenced the
way the Macintosh gui was developed. Without this respect, there will be little reason to alter the
status quo in his realm.
