A column 18ʺ square with fcʹ = 3ksi reinforced with 8, #8 bars of fy = 40ksi, supports a
service load of 93.97 kips (factored load = 115.27 kips). The load is acting at the base of
column. The allowable soil pressure at the level of the base of the column footing is
2.204 K/ft2. Design a square footing with 5ʹ below surface. Take unit weight of soil as
100 pcf.
Given Data
Square Column = 18 in
fcʹ = 3 Ksi, fy = 40 Ksi
8,#8 bars so Ab = 0.79 in2 & d = 1 in
Service Load = 93.97 kips
Factored Load = 115.27 Kips
Allowable Pressure = 2.204 k/ft2
Depth of Footing = 5 ft
Unit Weight of Soil = 100 Psf
Solution:
Step 1: Thickness of footing, h
Assume h = 15 in = 1.25 ft
davg = h - clear cover – one bar dia = 15 – 3 – 1 = 11 in
Step 2: Overburden pressure on footing, W
Depth of footing: Z = 5 ft = 6 in
Weight of Fill & Concrete footing = Wconc – Wfill = ℽ(z-h) + ℽh
W = 100(5-1.25) +(150*1.25) = 562.5 psf = 0.5625 ksf
Step 3: Effective Bearing Capacity qe = qa -W
qe = 2.204 - 0.5625 = 1.642 ksf
Step 4: Bearing area, Areq
Areq = Service load/qe
Areq = 93.97/1.642 = 57.23 ft2
Areq = BxB = 8 ft x 8 ft so B = 8 ft = 96 in
Step 5: Critical Shear Parameter, bo
b0 = 4(c+davg) = 4(18 + 11) = 116 in
Step 6: Design Pressure due to Factored Load
115.27
qu = Factored load/ Areq = = 1.801 ksf
