NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the 31Jul2009 Service

Letter. Changes have been made to the Parts Needed table to
add the following note (If Needed - See Action Required) for
part number 308-9523.

PROBLEM

New software and hydraulic hardware needs to be installed on certain

120M, 12M, 140M, 160M and 14M M-Series Motor Graders. The new
software and hardware will address multiple issues with these
machines. Problems addressed by this program are listed below.

Steering:

Sluggish steering due to incorrect hydraulic oil viscosity and

hydraulic tank oil temperatures.

Improvements to the steering software to improve steering response in

8th gear.

Improvement has been made to the steering software which would warn
the operator with a level 2 warning (E599-2, Gear too High for
Steering with Cold Oil) at cold temperatures when shifting to higher
gears. This change is effective only when the hydraulic oil tank
temperature is less than 25 degrees Celsius.

Brakes:

Improved service brake valve modulation in cold temperatures.

Transmission:

Delayed Direction Shift - The new transmission software can reduce

the time required for a direction shift from fifth gear (or above)
while the inching pedal is depressed.

NOTE: The above listed problems are Safety related and could impact
machine control with the possibility of personal injury or death.

NOTE: Listed below are descriptions of other product improvements

that have been incorporated in the software updates.

Steering:

Frequent nuisance event codes (IE E258, E192) created by machine

software.

Service Information System Page 3 of 36

Improved steering calibration process.

Engine:

Rated Power Changes

160M

Previous software lowered the power rating in 8th gear when all wheel
drive was enabled. This has been changed so that the power rating
will be constant in gears 5 through 8 when all wheel drive is
enabled.

140M

Previous software lowered the power rating in 8th gear when all wheel
drive was enabled. This has been changed so that the power rating
will be constant in gears 4 through 8 when all wheel drive is
enabled.

140M, 160M, 14M

On previous software and under specific conditions, these machines

could develop an engine stumble at startup or under engine
acceleration (inching pedal or throttle). This specific issue has
been corrected.

Transmission:

120M, 12M, 140M and 160M Shift Improvement:

Changes have been made to the transmission software to improve shift
quality by reducing the shift harshness between fourth and fifth
forward upshifts and downshifts.

14M Shift Improvement:

Changes have been made to the transmission software to improve power
transfer during the third to fourth reverse gear upshift while
reducing engine lug.

Implement:

A new implement feature has been developed for grading at three

levels of sensitivity. These levels are Fine, Normal and Coarse
grades using the blade lift/lower function. These levels of grading
can be achieved by selecting different maps through the Messenger
display.

Accugrade:

https://sis.cat.com/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/content.jsp?calledpage=/sisweb/sisweb/fulltext/f... 8/13/2009
Service Information System Page 4 of 36

The new implement software provides more stable blade control when
using AccuGrade. A new AccuGrade valve calibration must be performed
after the software upgrade. Refer to Testing and Adjusting Manuals,
KENR6333 or KENR8980, for the valve calibration procedures.

In addition, the Messenger Monitor Software should be flashed for

compatibility with the new Implement software.

ACTION REQUIRED
NOTE: New machine flash files are released periodically. Ensure you
are using the latest flash files by downloading the files from
SISWeb.

NOTE: The Transmission/Chassis, Implement #1,#2,#3, and the All Wheel

Drive ECMs can be flashed over the J1939 Data Link. The Messenger ECM
is flashed over CDL.

NOTE: Steering and Articulation calibration is required for all

groups noted in this Service Letter after all updates are completed.
Refer to Special Instruction, REHS4244, "A Procedure to Calibrate the
Steering on Certain Motor Graders" for the calibration procedures.

Note: For the oil flush procedure, refer to Special Instruction,

https://sis.cat.com/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/content.jsp?calledpage=/sisweb/sisweb/fulltext/f... 8/13/2009

REHS4240, "Procedure to Change Hydraulic Oil to an Arctic Oil

Viscosity".

Note: For oil cooler installation, refer to Special Instruction,

REHS4444, "Installation for Cold Weather Covers for the Oil Cooler".

Note: For Groups 4, 7, 9, 10, 13, 15, 16, 19 and 21, inspect the
brake control valve to ensure part number 308-9523 is installed. If
the 308-9523 is not installed, replace the brake control valve with a
new 308-9523 Brake Control Valve. Refer to your machines Disassembly
and Assembly Manual (120M and 12M = KENR6418), (140M = KENR6424),
(160M = RENR9727). The air needs to be purged from the brake system
after the brake control valve is replaced. Refer to RENR8471 for the
140M and 160M, RENR8464 for the 120M and 12M, and RENR8486 for the
14M.

Machines listed in the Affected Product may require rework procedures

in addition to those listed below. Refer to the attached Rework
Procedure for a listing of the required procedures by group number.

Groups 1 through 21

Use Cat Electronic Technician service tool to perform the following

work:
- Flash Implement #1 ECM with 341-9310 flash file.
- Flash Implement #2 and Implement #3 ECM (if applicable) with 349-
6967 flash file.
- Flash the Transmission/Chassis ECM with 341-9308 flash file.
- Flash 140M Engine ECM with 348-4327 flash file.
- Flash 160M Engine ECM with 348-3276 flash file.
- Flash 14M Engine ECM with 349-2782 flash file.
- Flash the Messenger Monitor Display with the flash file containing
the appropriate languages. Reference the following list for the
appropriate part number:
347-9062 Software-Monitor (English, Portuguese, Spanish, French,
German, Dutch).
347-9064 Software-Monitor (English, Portuguese, Danish, Finnish,
Swedish, Norwegian).
347-9066 Software-Monitor (English, Portuguese, Italian, Greek,
Hebrew, Turkish).
347-9068 Software-Monitor (English, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic,
Chinese).
347-9070 Software-Monitor (English, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovenian).

After the flashing of all ECMs is completed, start the machine, and
verify all ECM systems are functional.

SAFETY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR FLASHING NEW SOFTWARE AND

INSTALLING HYDRAULIC COMPONENTS ON CERTAIN 120M, 12M, 140M, 160M AND
14M MOTOR GRADERS TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE STEERING,
BRAKING, AND TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS ALONG WITH OTHER MULTIPLE MACHINE
ENHANCEMENTS

MODELS INVOLVED - 120M, 12M, 140M, 160M, AND 14M MOTOR GRADERS

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:

New steering and transmission software needs to be installed and the

steering hydraulic oil replaced on the machines listed below. Also,
the brake valve needs to be inspected and possibly replaced.

The operator may experience the following machine performance

characteristics:
- Steering warnings and/or sluggish steering response during roading
operations.
- Shift delays when performing a directional shift from 5th gear, or
above, while the inching pedal is depressed.
- Poor service brake valve modulation during cold weather operation
due to an orifice in the current brake valve.

Sluggish steering response, poor brake modulation, or delayed

directional shifts could impact machine control with the possibility
of personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service
performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this

service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete
