AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Aims: “How Green is Hospitality Industry”

This dissertation will start by briefly looking at government initiatives and consumer
concerns about environmental issues within the hospitality industry specifically
focusing on hotels. In will then discuss how hotels have used initiatives, to advertise
to and market to consumers, progressing to probe further into green claims, ‘green’
hotel labels and certifications. It then seeks to discuss the importance and relevance
of clear labelling from environmental issues, The article will explore the issue of
‘green marketing’ and ‘green washing;’ how it is seen to be exploiting current
legislation and to some extent consumer naivety, following this it will round up the
issues with hotel.

Objectives: Based upon above aims of the dissertation, the following objectives
have been formulated in order to carry out project.

 To analyse the Carbon Footprint level in the hospitality industry.

“Carbon Footprints is a measure of the impact our activities have on the


environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of
greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for
electricity, heating and transportation etc. The carbon footprint is a measurement of
all greenhouse gases we individually produce and has units of tonnes (or kg) of
carbon dioxide equivalent” (Honthaner, 2010; Carbon Foot print, 2010). Analysis of
carbon footprints level in the hospitality industry will facilitate in the understanding,

 To analyse the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices in the
hospitality industry.

“Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been on the agenda for big businesses
for some time now, but greater emphasis on such policies from politicians, business
leaders and consumers means that the trend towards responsible trading is filtering
down the commercial hierarchy to affect businesses of all sizes. Not to be outdone,
Conservative leader David Cameron has also leapt on the CSR bandwagon, urging
big businesses to act more responsibly. But while the corporate giants of this world
are slowly starting to get the message on the issue, smaller businesses are left in the
dark over what they can do to improve their own CSR policies and what impact it will
have on their bottom line. This sense of uncertainty over CSR is also hitting the
catering and hospitality trades, with restaurants and hotels alike often unsure of the
extent to which they should be embracing such policies and even what they entail”
(Lelic, 2006). This paper will analyse all the issue related to CSR in hospitality
industry.

 To analyse the Carbon Reduction Commitment level in the hospitality


industry.

Carbon Reduction Commitment is a mandatory cap and trade emissions scheme


launching in April 2010. The targets will be 5,000 large organisations including hotel
chains, whose emissions are currently not included in the EU Emission Trading
Scheme or Climate Changes Agreements. There will be reports on carbon emission
calculated annually. From April 2011 participations need to buy CRC allowances to
cover their anticipated emissions for each year. The allowance will be £12 per tonne
of CO2. Further in the paper there will be more topics covered like,

• What is CRC?

• What are the benefits of CRC?

• What will be the Non-Compliance?

• How will CRC help integrate environment management?

The above objectives have been formulated in such a manner that it will cover most
of the topic related to the aims of the dissertation. This dissertation is comprehensive
in nature and will cover the above issue in detail. In addition to above issue other
related issue will be also discussed if found relevant with the aims of dissertations.
The key words of the dissertation are– carbon footprint, corporate social
responsibility (CSR) and carbon reduction commitments (CRC).

Research Questions: The research questions for the primary data collection are as

• Is Hospitality as green as it likes to think?
• When did you last have an environmental audit?
• Has the credit crunch affected your green strategy?
• Are you really recycling as much waste as you should?
• What green jargon do you feel is the most meaningless?
• What is the main barrier to reducing your environmental impact?
• Will the economic downturn dent our enthusiasm for eco- friendliness?
• Anything else you want to add on the topic?
