much?
This is a hard question to answer but the pull of “Brand” is unmistakable.

When I first thought of an answer to this question, my first thought was Bayer Aspirin.
Felix Hoffman invented aspirin for Bayer in the late 1800s from the long-known palliative
effects of willow bark. Today there is absolutely no difference between Bayer and generic
aspirin. However, I will always buy Bayer even though it’s more expensive. They coat their
tablets with shiny wax and prepare them in a fashion that makes them look better than
the generic version. Has absolutely no impact on efficacy, but there you have it.

Another brand I will always buy is Listerine. I hate Scope and any other mouthwash. Has
to be Listerine. Same for Aim toothpaste. I won’t use any other brand.

If I am going to eat cereal, it MUST be Kellog’s Corn Flakes- no other brand is sufficient.
And they are all the same.

In the old days, if I was going to buy a gun, it was always Sturm-Ruger. Smith and
Wesson is shit in comparison. In the mid-80s and 90s S&W quality and design went
down the shitter. I have never changed my impression of them since though I know they
are better now. If I had the money (and was still buying guns) the H&K would be my
brand - they are the gold standard of firearms in my opinion. And I would never, ever
buy Glock. People who buy Glock shoot themselves in the leg frequently. I don’t care
about how “good” the gun is supposed to be. The lack of a real safety makes it a non-
starter for me. But I divested myself of the gun stupidity and the Hobby of Death after
Sandy Hook. Also, I would only buy Federal ammunition, the best general ammunition
on the market (though Remington for .22 and Fiocchi for specialized is good.). There is
nothing like the smell of a Federal shot shell ejecting from a .12 guage. I particularly liked
the paper shells but I don’t think you can get them anymore.

As for tools, my brand is DeWalt. I will always search for a DeWalt tool before anything
else with my fallback to Porter-Cable. When Sears still existed, my handtools were all
Craftsman - but Craftsman tools turned to shit in the early 2000s and I won’t buy them
anymore. For measuring its Starret, for grinding wheels it’s Baldor. Brand and quality
matters. When it comes to generators there is one and only one choice: Honda. If you
buy Coleman it absolutely will not start when you need it the most.

If I am going to buy audio/video I always check Sony first but usually get the LG because
it’s cheaper, not better.

For cars, the gold standard for me is Mercedes-Benz. They were the inventor of the
automobile and for general use quality I think they are the best on the market. Problem
is, the maintenance is a killer. It’s one thing to own a luxury car, but it’s another thing to
keep it on the road. When I lost all my money, the first things that went were the
Mercedes.

If I am going to buy good clothing, it’s always Levi Jeans. If I want suits, I get Polo. If I
want overcoats, its Burberry. In the old days I was a Florsheim man (“I’m a ‘Dapper Dan’
man” - George Clooney) for shoes. Now that I am poor I have come to love Ford
automobiles and have bought multiple Ford Edge autos and swear by them but if I had
the money I would buy the Lexus SUV. That thing is boss. (Do people still say “boss” or
am i just getting old. Maybe it’s “lit”. I don’t know.”)

For awhile I was a gold bug and the only gold I would buy was Canadian Maple Leafs.
American gold is a corrupted alloy and Kruggerands are non-standard shit. It has to be
Maple Leafs if you want pure quality in gold, weight and size.

When it came to appliances, I always wanted Maytag or Kenmore. No more Kenmore

now that Sears is gone and Maytag has gone to hell in a handbasket.

And for locks, it was always Masterlock, though Walmart destroyed them and their
quality is barely second rate now. It’s very, very sad. Even the finish is poor, all to cut
costs.

When it comes to lawn machines, Toro is easily the best, Tecumseh is far, far superior to
the gone-to-hell Briggs and Stratton and Stihl is still the best chainsaw for the money
since the gold standard Husqavarna is too expensive for the average buyer. I would only
get an Ariens snowblower. Never, ever buy anything that says John Deere - they have
sold out and their quality blows. The same goes for Black and Decker and Milwaukee
tools are even worse.

Red Wings are the only choice for work boots; Carhhart is still the best choice for
outdoor work clothes.

Raybans are still my sunglasses of choice, though I would love me some Maui Jim’s.
