1. Negative statements with “to be” in simple present:

To say the opposite or negate something just add “not” after the verb to be:

Full form: Short form:


• I am not a police officer. I’m not a police officer.
• They are not friends. They aren’t friends.
• She is not here. She isn’t here.
• He is not shy. He isn’t shy.
• We are not robots. We aren’t robots.
• You are not a pilot. You aren’t a pilot.
• It is not a car. It isn’t a car.

2. Yes/no questions with “to be” in simple present:

Questions where the answer is always yes or no:


• Are you a student? Yes, I am a student.

Change the position of the verb and the Subject and add a question mark at the end (?).

She is ok. You are from china. They are friends.

Is she ok? Are you from china? Are they friends?

My name is Peter.

Is my name Peter?

1. Wh- questions with “to be”

Questions that begin with wh-question words. We use them to obtain information.

The general form:

Wh-question word + to be + Subject + complement?

Examples:
• Who are you? I am Peter.
• Who is he? He is my brother.
• What is her name? Her name is Ashley.
• What is that? That is a ball.
• Where are you from? I’m from Dominican Republic.
• What is she like? She is friendly and talkative.
• How are you today? I am fine/tired/fantastic, etc. Thanks
