Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
Welcome to the English 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Identify Features
of Persuasive Texts.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
public institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the
module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own
learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do
the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
Welcome to the English 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Identify Features
of Persuasive Texts.
Most of us feel wanting to do something to try to win the arguments we engage in. On
some level, we all want to be right, and we all want others to see the error of their ways.
More times than not, however, arguments in which both sides try to win end up producing
losers all around. The more productive approach is to persuade your audience to consider
your opinion as a valid one, not simply the right one.
Persuasive text is a form of nonfiction writing that encourages careful word choice, the
development of logical arguments, and cohesive summary.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
What I Need to Know

This module will assist you in encouraging the learners to develop their
understanding of how writing can influence or change another’s thoughts or actions.
Please help the learners in sharing their ideas and knowledge from their
experiences so that there will be collaboration and learning will be easy.
Answers are written at the back of this module. Inculcate to the learners the value
of honesty while answering this module.

For the learner:

The first step to understanding persuasion is to recognize the role it plays on our
everyday lives. You need to discuss why one reasoning is better than another.
Generally, it is an exercise in creating a win-win situation. You present a case that
others might have varied opinion about.
The purpose of persuasive text is to convince the reader or listener to argue with
a particular viewpoint on a certain topic or issue. It helps you formulate specific reasons
for your opinions, and provides opportunity to research facts related to you opinions.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. identify features of persuasive text;
2. distinguish the basic modes of persuasion; and
3. create a lead for a persuasive paragraph that uses each technique.

What’s New

POWERFUL language
Direction: Highlight all the powerful language in the persuasive
writing piece below.

Bullying is never acceptable under any circumstances. It is

revolting, nasty and cruel. There are limitless arguments for this
including: it terrifies children and makes them fear school, it adds to
personal, emotional burdens and bullying damages people both
physically and emotionally. Do you want your children so frightened
from bullies that they can’t even face going to school?
Firstly, in our schools today there are children who are
actually so afraid, that they don’t want to go to school because of
bullying. Allowing this disgusting behavior to continue could seriously
impact the future of our children and prevent them from learning and
becoming successful at life. How could anybody stand by and let this
atrocity happen?
Secondly, children today are already dealing with so many
burdens. School should provide a safe and positive environment for
these young people to escape any stress and anxieties that they are
facing at home. Banning bullying is the first step that we must take
as a society to nurture and protect all children, especially those at
risk due to their difficult home life.
Thirdly, kids should never, ever be hurt, physically and
emotionally. Bullying cause long term scarring that can traumatize a
child for the rest of their life. We are putting the children of our future
at risk of developing serious mental illness by allowing this bullying
to continue.

In conclusion, no one can deny that bullying must be trusted.

It’s appalling that we haven’t fixed this problem yet! We are scaring
children away from school, adding to their emotional burdens and
causing life-long physical and emotional scars. Please come together
and take a stance against bullying, it is the right thing to do!
