VISIT OF THE NIGHT-PURRER

3am and I'm woken by something soft

Only a sense of breathing near my face
A soundless tiny engine whirring softly
A silken unseen visit in the dark
A presence only

I smile "Hello"
I know who this is
I put out my hand to touch to stroke to fondle
The tiny machine whirs happily
Pressing itself into my loving hand
Wheedling and fondling in its turn
I know who does this

Then something happens

A change of pressure in the air
The something leaps over my head and vanishes
A disappearance in the dark
As if it had never been

Just my imagination then

An unknown visitor who makes me smile
Then disappears (copyright e.j.ward 2021)
