The Census is a snapshot of who we are and tells the for all Tamils living in this country, but also for our
story of how we are changing. It will ask ques:ons future genera:ons.

August 2021. Including visitors and babies. the paper-form or online, we ask that you pay close
Iden:fying ourselves as Tamils is important, not only aGen:on to two ques:ons.

Does the person use a language other than English at home? (Ques5on 20).
This ques:on asks whether someone
uses a language other than English at
home, and if so, which language they
use most oIen. It is encouraged by the
Australian Bureau of Sta:s:cs (ABS) to
list all the languages spoken at home.
ABS collects this informa:on so that the
government and organisa:ons to plan
appropriately and provide ongoing support for various languages. For example, libraries use Census
data to understand languages spoken in local communi:es and they can stock in-language books for
their readers.

What is the person’s ancestry? (Ques5on 22).

According to ABS Ancestry can be related to the place a person or their parents or grandparents were
born or the cultural group they most iden:fy with. For example, a person may have been born in
Australia, but if they have Tamil ancestry, we should iden:fy them as such. This helps ABS clearly
understand the diverse culture prevalent in Australia.
We can provide up to two ancestries. We request that all Tamils correctly iden:fy our ancestry.
As a direct result of failing to do so in the past, the actual popula:on of Tamils living here was not
accurately accounted in the past. ABS has published that on this site:
h#ps://www.abs.gov.au/websitedbs/censushome.nsf/home/factsheetsancsri?opendocument&navpos=450

ABS has changed the classifica:on

in 2011 for those who reported as
having Tamil ancestry. This
response has been split into three -
7127: Sri Lankan Tamil; 7128:
Indian Tamil; 7131: Tamil, nfd (not
further defined)
We urge you to respond appropriately (at least as TAMIL) if any of your grandparents were born
with Tamil iden:ty.
