The material that we are currently using for the washing machine tub is steel sheet covered with
porcelain enamel. The pros that I see in this type of tub is, it is cheaper and very accessible, it
has better surface, high scratch resistance, excellent acid and alkali resistance plus lower
maturing temperatures and workability. Regardless of the pros there are also cons for this kind
of material and one of this is porcelain enamel tubs may chip or wear away over time, exposing
the steel underneath and the exposed steel will rust, which can weaken the tub and stain
clothing. Some problems might occur in the manufacturing process especially if the enamel is
not properly used in steel, if the steel is still wet from the sandblasting bubbles may be formed,
though it can easily be removed but it is still time consuming. The process of adding enamel to
the steel is likely to be most costly in the fabrication because it is an extra process and aside
from the machines to be used for metal preparations you will also need equipment to be used
for enameling.
2. Before converting the porcelain-enamel coated steel to stainless steel I looked for its pros and
cons. The pros of using stainless steel as a washing machine tub is it is very durable and can last
longer, can hold up to high spin speeds; because higher spin speeds remove water from clothes
and make laundry easier to dry, it is more energy-efficient overall. The only cons that I see in
using stainless steel is it is more expensive, and may be prone to collecting dirt because steel is
magnet for dirt, dust and smudges though its is easy to clean off. I think the asset is the stainless
steel itself because other that giving satisfaction to the costumers, when it comes to the
manufacturing process we will only focus on the steel and there is not added materials and
process needed like enameling. The only liability that I see on the product fabrication is when
forging the mental since it has a high melting point it will be challenging to fabricate the
stainless steel it means manufacturing machines that is suitable for the formation of stainless-
steel tub is needed to fasten the product fabrication.
3. While looking at the three types of stainless steel they all are unique and they have different
purposes, for washing machine I think Ferritic stainless steel is the best to use. Ferritic steel has
a similar property to mild steel, but better corrosion, heat and cracking resistance. Ferritic steels
are among the least expensive forms of stainless steel. It contains 12% chromium which makes
this steel non-hardenable.
4. The best strengthening mechanism for ferritic stainless steel is recrystallization annealing
because it develops minimum hardness and maximum ductility, that impacts toughness and
corrosion resistance in the annealed and quenched condition. Cold work can still harden the
metal but it might not be enough because their work hardening rate is very low therefore, it is
extremely difficult to achieve high strength.
5. I find this step desirable because cold-rolled sheet is used to finish a steel. Cold-rolled steel will
cover the blemishes and makes a well-known fine smooth finish to the tub.
6. Because of the extreme importance of having stainless steel surfaces thoroughly clean prior to
annealing, it is suggested that test samples be processed and annealed before starting full-scale
production. When exposed to annealing temperatures, unclean parts can be severely damaged,
and the remedy is generally expensive. Testing will reveal, in advance, the cleanliness of the
parts. I would suggest a simple cleaning, wiping finger marks, removing ink stencil marks. After
this we can also do chemical cleaning methods for the removal of drawing compounds and
machining lubricants from stainless steel workpieces. Alkaline solutions are used for the removal
of water soluble materials, and the methods of applying them are determined by the contour of
workpieces and by the volume of production to be handled.
