LESSON NO. 2

I. Title/Topic: Models of Communication

II. Objectives:
1. describe the models of communication
2. differentiate the various models of communication
3. describe how each element in the model affects communication

III. Directions/ Instructions/Lesson Discussion:

Linear Model- the first model of communication. It is a unidirectional model. It

presents a simple communication act and involves persuasion, not mutual
understanding. Lastly, it values psychological effects over social effects.
Interactive model of communication is not a linear model of communication or one
sender or a one-way process instead is defined as an interactive two-way process of
communication as both participants are equally involved in alternate position for
encoding and decoding messages. The sender and receiver generate meaning by
sending the message and receiving feedback. Here the term feedback refers to the
message that is sent by the receiver in response to the one he has received earlier by
the sender. One of the most striking features of the interactive model of
communication is the inclusion of the feedback loop.

C. Transactional Model Transactional Model

Transactional model is the process of continuous change and transformation where
every component is changing such as the people, their environments and the medium
used. Due to this, it assumes the communicators to be independent and act any way
they want.

Since both sender and receiver are necessary to keep the communication alive in
transactional model, the communicators are also interdependent to each other. For
example, transactional communication is not possible if the receiver is not listening to
sender.

The transactional model is the most general model of communication. Everyday talk
and interactions are also a form of transactional model communication. It is more
efficient for communicators with similar environment and individual aspects. For
instance, communication between people who know each other is more efficient as
they share same social system.

In transactional model, efficiency, and reliability of communicated message also

depends on the medium used. For example, the same message might not be perceived
by a person the same way when it is sent through a phone and when it is provided
face to face. It is because of possible loss of message on a phone call or absence of
gestures.

C. Lasswell Communication Model

The Lasswell Model of Communication is a framework for critiquing and
deconstructing the elements involved in mass communication. The model asks 5
questions: Who? Said what? In which channel? To Whom? With what effect? It is
best known as the original ‘linear model’ because it conceptualizes learning as
moving in only one direction.

D. Shannon-Weaver Model of Communication

In 1948, Shannon was an American mathematician, Electronic engineer and Weaver

was an American scientist both of them join together to write an article in “Bell
System Technical Journal” called “A Mathematical Theory of Communication” and
also called as “Shannon-Weaver model of communication”.
This model is specially designed to develop the effective communication between
sender and receiver. Also they find factors which affecting the communication
process called “Noise”. At first the model was developed to improve the technical
communication. Later it’s widely applied in the field of Communication.

The model deals with various concepts like Information source, transmitter, Noise,
channel, message, receiver, channel, information destination, encode and decode.

IV. LAS Activities:

Activity 1. The Movie Scene

Based on a movie or television show, describe an interaction between two characters that
is linear and transactional in nature. For the linear model, explain how the sender and
receiver's channels, environment, and noise impact the exchange. For the transactional
model, explain how feedback, the fluidity of communication, and the relational nature of
communication impact the exchange.

Title of the Movie Describe and explain the interaction

between two characters that is linear
and transactional in nature.

Linear
Transactional

Activity 2: Create a Model

Create a communication model that reflects how most people communicate in the present
situation under new normal. How will your communication model will look like? Explain
its components.

Activity 3: Accomplish your EAR Learning Log
