STORYTELLING COMPETITION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS 2021
RULES AND GUIDELINES

1) INTRODUCTION

- Storytelling is an effective teaching and learning activity to help improvethe


standard of English among pupils.

- The Storytelling Activity / Competition will be carried out at school, district /


division, state and national levels.

2) OBJECTIVES

- To enhance pupils’ confidence in using English.

- To give pupils the opportunity to use English in an interesting, authentic


and creative manner.

- To enhance and improve listening and speaking skills.

- To instill pupils’ interest in reading and writing in English.

3) RULES AND REGULATIONS

3.1. The competition is open to all Year 4 to Year 6 pupils from government-
aided schools. For district level, the best three will represent his/her
district at the state level. For state level, only ONE contestant will
represent his / her state at the national level.

The competition is divided into two sections:

Section 1 : Prepared - any story


Section 2 : Impromptu - national level only

- For Section 1, contestants are to observe the following rules:

- Stories presented can be authentic, adapted or originally written.

- Stories presented must not touch on sensitive issues such asrace,


religion, stereotyping, politics, etc.

- Stories must be thematically educational.

- Props, backdrops and sound effects are not allowed. Any use of these
will allow for disqualification by the judges.

- Time allocated to present the story is 4 to 5 minutes.

- The performance should be recorded and saved in MP4 / 3GP / AVI/


MOV / WMV format.

- The video must be sent to the organizer via the link address/ Google Form that
will be notified by the organizing PPD.

- Video submitted will not be returned to the owner and the organizer reserves
the right to publish the winning videos of this competition. However, the
copyright remains as the property of the owner.

For Section 2, contestants are to observe the following rules:

- Impromptu section will be conducted via video tele-conferencing between the


contestant, the panel of judges and the timekeeper.

- Each contestant will get their turn to present their impromptu story.

- Each contestant will choose an envelope containing a card. The chief judge will
read aloud the phrase to the contestant.

- After 30 seconds, contestants tell their story based on the phrase.

- Stories told in Section 2 should not be a repetition or reproduction of any story


presented in Section 1. Contestantswill be disqualified if they do so.

- Any inclusion of singing should enhance and not dominate the presentation.

- Time allocated to present the impromptu story is 2 to 3 minutes. The bell will
be rung at the 3rd minute. Marks will be deducted thereafter.

Infringement

A maximum of 10 marks will be deducted if a contestant:

- touches on sensitive issues such as race, religion,politics, etc. – 2 marks


- presents a story below the stipulated time – 2 marksfor every minute
- presents a story above the stipulated time – 2 marksfor every minute
- uses props, backdrops and electronically-aided soundeffects – 2 marks
- overdramatizing – 2 marks

A contestant will be disqualified if:

- he / she reads or refers to notes / reading materials.

- he / she is prompted by another person.

- he / she repeats any story presented in Section 1 during the impromptu


session.

4) ADJUDICATION

- The competition at the national level will be judged by a panel of 3 (three)


judges, appointed by the organizing PPD/ JPN.

- Points will be allocated according to the score sheet.

- The contestant with the majority of votes will be declared the winner.

- The decision of the judges is final. No appeal is allowed.

- Individual marks will not be disclosed.

6) NOTES

 The concept of this State Level Competition is in line with the concept of the
2021National Level Competition.

 The JPN and KPM have the right to broadcast video recordings of the competition
on any platform for publicity or educational purposes.

 This concept paper is valid for 2021 until further notification or revision from the
Ministry of Education Malaysia and can be used at all levels for competitions
organized by the Ministry. The competition will abide to the above rules ONLY.
