Art Forms in the Philippines

Learning Competency:
Discusses various art forms found in the
Philippines CAR11/12IAC-0b-2
Ready to Launch!
Art is everywhere, from the simplest designed objects we use, to the
spaces and structures we inhabit. Art enriches our lives with meanings that
we often overlook. Art responds to our human desire to experience beauty and
explore the unknown. We shape art. Art shapes our being. Art makes us hu-
man.
In an enlightened and democratic society, art must be pluralistic, all ar-
tistic expressions must be given equal importance regardless of whether they
are produced in an urban or regional context. The art of today, or what is re-
garded as “Contemporary Art”, is therefore democratic, encompassing and
new.

Aim at the Target!

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. discuss contemporary art in the Philippines

2. identify and discuss the characteristics of contemporary art
3. discuss aspects of contemporary art as seen in selected artworks
4. explain the use of contemporary art

Try This!
Our brain can interpret images much quicker than text. This is
why images can communicate a product, service or brand instantly.
Images give depth and context to a description or story and provide a much
more immersive experience than writing alone.
We can see lots of meaningful pictures on the internet that speaks thou-
sands of meanings. These pictures only differs in interpretation depending on
the person who interprets it.

Instructions: Interpret pictures based on your perspective. How would you

interpret these pictures?
What to do:
1. Give your interpretation to the following pictures
2. Write your perceptions
3. How would you relate these pictures to what is happening to our society
now a days?
Pause, Reflect and Write your interpretations on your answer sheets

APPLICATION

Precolonial paintings in the Philippines are found in the body tattoos and pot-
tery. The pintados (painted ones who inhabited the Visayan islands had tattoo
of geometric designs all over their bodies. In Kalinga, Mountain Province, the
tattoo designs imitated the traditional upper garment of the males. The woman
painted their faces with bright red color. Pottery was also painted with colourful
designs. In Mindanao, the naga dragons and sarimanok carved the panolong on
the sides of the torogan or the King’s house, were painted in different colors or
red, blue, and yellow on white background
History tells us that when the Spaniards landed at the place, they were received by
men with heavy tattoos all over their bodies.

As part of the history, body painting or the art of Tattooing was a means of display-
ing status or achievements. These body arts were symbols of seniority and power,
especially in the community. These tattoos speak of people’s identity as head hunt-
ers, being a warrior or as a member of a certain group or tribe. In certain cases, they
also considered these tattoos as charm or amulets.

Tattoos during those times were given through a ceremony or when they accomplish
something significant in the community. Visayan Men and women alike were tat-
tooed heavily during those times for various reasons.
