SIWT №3 – Specificity of editorial reading and editing of the semantic structure of

the text. Text as the subject of the editor's work. Interpretation of the concept-text. Basic
properties of text. The scheme of the editor's work with text
Tasks:
1. Fill the gap. Find proper words. During the introductory reading, the editor
must determine the theme and idea of the work, evaluate the style of the author, his
professionalism and knowledge of the subject.
At the first reading, you should not correct mistakes, as this will distract from the need to
objectively evaluate of the text.
The scheme of the semantic structure of the text allows the editor to identify logical errors
and inaccuracies made by the author.
2. There are two main interpretations of the concept of “text”: “immanent”
(extended, philosophically loaded) and “representational” (more specific). Give more
information about them.
3. At what stage pf working on text does the editor checks the accuracy of the
information provided by the author of the document; considers whether the actual material is
sufficient or additional information is needed; checks citations, references, and bibliographic
data?
a) Third stage
b) Second stage ✓
c) First stage
d) Fourth stage. Write what the editor does at the other stages?

The editor's work begins with reading the text of the document.
During the first (introductory) reading, it is not recommended to make corrections to the
text. Notes should be written on a separate sheet, indicating the page of the document. The first
time the text is read with an error setting: in any part of the document, an actual or speech
inaccuracy can be made.
The work on editing the text cannot begin with stylistic editing and even with a logical-
compositional assessment of the text. Editing of the text should begin with an assessment of the
correspondence of the written text to its topic.
After reading the document, the editor establishes connections between the main and non-
main aspects of the problem, facts, assesses the semantic integrity of the text and can predict
how the text will be understood by the reader.
After that, the editor proceeds to in-depth, analytical reading. In-depth reading allows you
to identify inaccuracies: it is necessary to compare the dates, pay attention to the stylistic
coloring of words, the choice of synonyms.
At the first stage of work on the text, the editor thinks over the sequence of actions; finds
out what additional information on the discussed problems it is desirable to collect; ponders
which types of revisions are best to use when working with this document.
At the second stage of work on the text, the editor checks the accuracy of the information
provided by the author of the document; thinks over whether the factual material is sufficient or
additional information is needed; checks citations, references, bibliographic data. At this stage of
the work, the editor discusses significant remarks with the author of the document.
At the third stage of work on the text, the editor makes corrections to the text. Corrections
must be made carefully, in legible handwriting. Use only one side of the sheet in your work.

Painting on unclear characters is not allowed. The desired character is inscribed above the
crossed out one. Comments to the author are written in the margin or on a separate sheet.
Inserts fit between lines or in margins. All discarded or replaced words are crossed out with
a single line. Text transferred from one page to another is outlined in colored pencil and
accompanied by notes, for example: from page 4; on page 10. These markers are surrounded by
a line.
The fourth stage of work on the text is control, grinding reading. The editor reads the
corrected text, analyzes his work and sends the prepared text to the author for signature.
