UCSP: Activity 2

1. How do you apply Merton’s Strain Theory in explaining deviance in society?

Give an example.
Merton’s Strain Theory define demonstrates the accessibility of the opportunities
to achieve goals in the society. All members of society have goals that can be
same or different, not all can achieve this goal because of the challenges in
providing the means of achieving it. Due to lack of opportunities to achieve those
goals, people may resort to deviance. Deviance is the resistance in doing what is
socially acceptable. Merton recognizes four types of deviance and this is how we
can apply it in society. First scenario is when an individual came from a
lowincome family, they will strive to be successful using their own creativity and
knowledge, this scenario shows innovation. Second scenario is when an individual
does not care about achieving the goal but stays to the conventional means to
feel honorable, this scenario shows ritualism. Third scenario is when an individual
reject both of conventional means and achieving goals. Lastly, rebellion, when an
individual rebels both goals and that compromises the existing social order.

2. What other factors (not included in Hirschi’s control theory) can you think
of which makes individuals less likely to commit crime? Explain.
If there is an authority ruling the society then it can prevent crimes. If there is a
ordinance or punishment in doing crimes, people would be resist doing it to not
have consequences. A good governance that provides equality and justice to
everyone can make its society in control and maintain its social order.

3. Do you think capital punishment is justifiable means of social control by the

state? Explain.
No, capital punishment does not assure justice and reduce crimes in the future.
Furthermore, it has no public safety benefit and it oppose beliefs of people. Some
of the criminals are wrongly accused too, thus, it will be unfair to people involved.
Social control does not require harsh punishment to maintain order, the
government must provide the society its needs and rights for peace.
