Combat pistol shooting, different from target shooting, began to evolve in the early 1900s, but it
wasn't until later that modern tactics of pistol combat gained traction and was implemented by two
British members of the Shanghai Municipal Police. At the time, the Shanghai streets were rife with
criminal activity and hitherto out-of-control violence, making the city streets hazardous to police.
Both Captain William E. Fairbairn and Sergeant Eric A. Sykes developed innovative pistol shooting
techniques and handgun specifications for the police force. They proved to be so successful that the
duo was recalled to Britain to train the British Commandos in their combat tactics, including their
system of combat pistol shooting. Their methodology was later published in their book Shooting
To Live With The One-Hand Gun in 1942. These techniques were also adopted for the training of the
American Office of Strategic Services troops by Rex Applegate. This technique is still used today and
is known as the modern point shooting technique.
Fast forward to the 1950s, where an American instructor Jeff Cooper establishing both a combat
pistol based sport, International Practical Shooting and a combat pistol training school. Cooper's
methodology, known as the modern technique, differs from Fairbairn techniques in a lot of ways, with
an as yet unresolved argument as to which techniques are better.

MALFUNCTION CLEARING DRILLS

It's important to remember that these drills have been designed with real-world shooters in mind
engaged in combat shooting, sometimes cartridges do not feed into the chamber properly and cause
a "Jam" the easiest way of simulating this in our world is for someone in your party to call "JAM!" The
Jam must be quickly corrected so that firing can resume. There are variations of malfunction drills
used in the real world, including the two most often required in competition: clearing a cartridge that
fails to fire and clearing a double feed malfunction. However, for this drill we will stick to a "Jam" or
a double feed, which in the real world means a spent or unspent round remains in the chamber while
another round is also trying to load into the same space.
The process for clearing a pistol "Jam" in this case would be to keep the pistol pointed at the
ground, remove the pistol's magazine, rack the slide until the blockage has freed itself, replace the
magazine, rack again to place a round into the chamber and continue firing.

P226
Springers have a bit of a bad reputation within the airsoft world, known to be inferior
to their Gas, C02 and electric powered brethren. However, Jia Dyi have just announced a
range of spring-loaded offerings that have definitely caught our attention! The Y&P P226 is
life like, full-size replica of a Sig P226 pistol. It’s a spring powered pistol with a good build
and looks amazing also feels great in hand. There is a metal trigger and inner barrel, the
metal weight adds to the realism of this gun. The underside rail will allow you to attach
accessories such as flashlight or laser, it also has a working mock hammer. This pistol is
very good for target practice in your back garden or even as a cheap sidearm for games. It
is very reliable and hardly drops a shot while firing at a respectable 250 fps.

1 VIPER TACTICAL
LAZER SPECIAL OPS PLATE CARRIER
Viper Tactical have made a plate carrier that just cannot be ignored! Its appearance, quality,
versatility, and price (that is extremely competitive) means that this is a serious contender in the
world of skirmish field plate carriers. Seriously, it's really good.
Constructed around two ample plate pockets, with foam inserts, the platform is both lightweight
and comfortable. An innovative platform that allows the user to customise and alter the platform
to their skirmish field needs using the most up to date manufacturing techniques. The Lazer Cut
System is based on Viper Tactical's strongest 600D Cordura, which is cut out on the latest laser
flatbed machines. It is then reinforced with tough and lightweight webbing and when both of the
plate pockets attach together, this adds strength and durability.
Viper Tactical's 'Lazer Cut System' is a unique operational tailored setup that is compatible with
other Molle/Modular systems, although we would always recommend checking out the range of
Viper Tactical's modular equipment that they offer.
Featuring Lazer cut MOLLE panels and a triple magazine kangaroo pouch and a front plate
pocket admin compartment that, on the whole, is extremely scalable with a generous Skeletal
Cummerbund system, allowing for larger girths and additional pouch mounting.
An adjustable shock band integrated into the shoulder straps distribute the carriers loaded
weight perfectly across your shoulders and torso whilst offering a good level of cushioning
support. Once on, you'll notice what Viper Tactical refers to as their 'Padded Ventex Internals',
this helps regulate your body's temperature and wick away perpetration.
Available in V-Cam, Black, Green, Coyote, this functional and scalable rig makes this plate
carrier an appealing and affordable alternative.

suffer from availability problems in the UK and reports have found
shop after shop holding very little or no stock. Despite there being two
versions of this plate carrier, try as we might, we were only able to
secure their 1st edition and due to their achilles heel in availabilty, we
were forced to purchase this rig from a popular auction site.
As you would expect, our initial impression is that Emmerson Gear
have produced a lightweight plate carrier constructed using 500d
Cordura made from authentic Multicam material and chosen to use
genuine “Hypalon” to fashion the shoulder straps. The laminated
3-band cummerbund is spacious and comfortable, if not a little too
rigid but we think this would 'give' a little over time and use. As with

slightly longer and designed for a 308-style magazine. Both are identical in performance but designed differently to take specific magazines.

THE SAS WAS FOUNDED IN 1941 WITH THE UNIT SPECIALISING IN MANY
ROLES, INCLUDING COUNTER-TERRORISM, HOSTAGE RESCUE, DIRECT

ABOUT THE SAS IS HIGHLY CLASSIFIED AND NOT COMMENTED ON BY
EITHER THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT OR THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE.
HOWEVER, THE SAS WAS FIRST THRUST INTO THE PUBLIC MEDIA
SPOTLIGHT WITH THE IRANIAN EMBASSY SIEGE. THE SUCCESS OF
"OPERATION NIMROD" NOT ONLY BROUGHT THE SAS TO THE PUBLIC
EYE FOR THE FIRST TIME BUT IT WAS ALSO SEEN AS A POLITICAL
WIN FOR THATCHER'S GOVERNMENT.
The resulting success quickly overwhelmed the SAS by the number of applications it
received and created a demand for their very special skill sets from foreign governments.
After the operation, many factual television documentaries were produced. The siege's
dramatic conclusion inspired a wave of fictional works about the SAS in novels, television
programmes, and films, such as Who Dares Wins and the 2017 film 6 Days making this
ultra-secretive organisation that once operated in the shadows a household name.

OPERATING IN THE SHADOWS

Even before the regiments media exposure during the
Iranian Embassy siege, the SAS played an extremely vital
role within the British Army.
Formed in July 1941 by David Stirling and originally called
"L" Detachment, Special Air Service Brigade was seen as a
Commando Force operating behind enemy lines and initially
consisted of five officers and 60 other ranks. Its first
mission, in November 1941, was a parachute drop in support
of the Operation Crusader offensive, which was actually
classed as a disaster, but we won't go into that.
Three years later, in 1944, the SAS Brigade was formed,
comprising of...

■ 1ST SPECIAL AIR SERVICE

■ 2ND SPECIAL AIR SERVICE
■ 3RD SPECIAL AIR SERVICE
■ 4TH SPECIAL AIR SERVICE
■ 5TH SPECIAL AIR SERVICE
■ F SQUADRON (responsible for signals and communications)

They were tasked with parachute operations behind the

German lines in France, where they carried out operations
supporting the Allied advance through France.
In fact, despite a few years in the wilderness at the end
of WWII where the SAS ware disbanded, this elite fighting
force has taken part in numerous wars and conflicts from
Korea through to and including the Falklands War and
Afghanistan. Also, in the not too distant past the SAS were
deployed to the streets of the UK to combat the terrorist
threat from Islamist extremists.
Today the SAS is a far cry from the early days. It is
believed to be between 400 to 600 strong, with four
operational squadrons: A, B, D and G. Each unit consists of
approximately 65 members and is divided into four troops
that are believed to consist of 16 members, with each troop
being broken down further into patrols comprised of four
members with each member possessing a particular skill set
such as signals, demolition, medic or linguist. Interestingly
the whole squadron idea came about during WWII when the
unit's name was intended to confuse German intelligence.
The SAS squadron duty rotations are set up to keep
one full squadron on Counter-Terrorism duty in the UK; a
second will be on a deployment; a third will be preparing
for deployment whilst conducting short term training; and
the fourth will be preparing for long-term overseas training
such as jungle or desert exercises.

SAS RAID
In the aftermath of one such incident, members of the Special
Air Service joined counter-terrorism police on raids. The media
showed Photographs and footage of Special Forces, with very
distinctive assault rifles and High-speed low drag gear that clearly
identified these individuals as serious operators and not normal
soldiers (if we can call our armed forces that) after they burst
into a flat in the city centre. The media frenzy that followed was
more than likely unwanted attention by the SAS, but a reassuring
presence to the nation in what was a very dark period in the
United Kingdom's War against Terrorism.
The SAS Trooper we are going to concentrate on for this article
has a very distinctive look. His chosen clothing promotes a tactical
urban crossover that utilises some 'high-street' clothing.

BARENTS PRO TROUSERS
You can be as experimental as you want with what to wear and lets face it, it's
pretty much high street/outdoor brands we're going to cover here. We went with
a branded blue T-shirt from Rab. They make rugged, high-performance mountain
clothing which is perfect for our look. There's nothing fancy about the T-shirt, it's
just a basic and honest, short sleeve T-shirt, in a comfortable organic cotton.
The pants, on the other hand are definitely fancy and equally very hard
working. Fjällräven are a Swedish outdoor clothing and equipment company that
are committed to making nature more accessible. They focus on well designed
simplicity and practicality, and until 2017 remained firmly rooted in the outdoor
clothing market, but not anymore as Fjällräven were thrust into the
tactical gear arena in a dramatic and spectacular way, which sent
numerous gear blogs and forums into a frenzy, in turn creating
another revenue stream for Fjällräven that they didn’t expect to
have. Look out for more Fjällräven products in future issues of Ai
as we work closely with them on their seasonal releases.
The Barents Pro Trousers are crammed with features that will
cater for all seasons of walking, bushcraft and general outdoor
stress that work equally at home or on the skirmish field.
Many of the Fjällräven garments are manufactured using
the companies own fabric, called 'G-1000'. Essentially it's
a tight weave of 65% polyester and 35% cotton blend
and then waxed with Fjällräven’s own Greenland Wax.
This combination makes G-1000 extremely durable, well
ventilated and also wind and water-resistant. G-1000 is
even mosquito-proof! Not that you are likely to need that
here in the UK, but we think it's well worth mentioning.
In total, Fjällräven have six versions of their G-1000
fabric and each hold their own specific properties. For
instance, the 'Eco' and G-1000 ‘Air’ are made from recycled
polyester and organic cotton. Applying a Greenland Wax coating
will further improve and extend the life of any G-1000 garment.
The Barent Pro Trousers have an intentional two-tone
appearance, which clearly display the darker areas of stretch
fabric, that are designed to aid the wearer's mobility, whereas
the lighter areas are non-stretch G-1000 material.
The ventilation areas are positioned on the upper and lower
sections of each leg and when closed, the zip-pull stows away
to prevent it from flapping around and snagging. According to
Fjällräven, the ventilation allows the Barents to be
worn in up to 30 degrees heat.
The left thigh pocket features a zip closure, whereas
the right pocket has an internal stretch fabric material
pocket (no zip) for phone and device storage. DROP POUCH

FAST HELMET
With so many replica FAST helmets on the market
these days that all differ in price and quality, players
are really spoiled for choice. Undoubtedly, most
purchases are driven by quality and affordability,
which is tough as cheap doesn't always mean quality.
However, one FAST helmet certainly made an
impression when it leapt onto the market as it
boasted both quality and affordability and was
pretty comfortable to wear. Viper Tactical’s FAST
helmet is supplied with many different internal
fitting pads to add a level of comfort plus very clear,
full-colour instructions on how to set the helmet up.
The Arc Rails, if anything, are a little narrow, which isn’t
uncommon, but that being said they have a good depth
to them, allowing you to secure a number of different
accessories with just a little help from some lube.
An Adjustable Dial Suspension System that allows you
to fine-tune the helmet's fit is a welcome and unexpected

In case you were wondering, the abbreviation "OTB" has its roots firmly planted in the military world
and would usually refer to 'Water Bourn Mission' hence the fin friendly profile, but in this case, "Over
The Beach" refers to the driving force behind this boot. Dan Ellis who founded the OTB boot company
in 2007 also designed other boots, you may have seen or indeed even be wearing a pair of Dan Ellis
boots without even realising it. For Instance, Dan is credited with the design of the BLACKHAWK
'Light Assault' and 'Desert Ops' boots as well as the original AKU Pilgrim boot,
You could say that Dan Ellis has come "full circle" as 11 years ago the OTB company sprang into life
with their first boot, the tactical water boot, which was explicitly designed for US Navy SEALs.
Today OTB doesn't exist with Dan Ellis as its CEO and lead designer, as New Balance took over OTB
and respectfully continued to offer the quaility of Dan Ellis's original standards.
Today this inspired design team have teamed up with the 50-year-old leading manufacturer and
supplier of mil-spec boots for the US DOD 'The Altama Boot Company' to design what we have
exclusively on display here; the Altama OTB Maritime Assault Boot.

ENTER KARRIMOR SF
Karrimor SF are a British-based manufacturer who specialise in the creation of rucksacks and load carriage equipment for use in some of the
harshest environments on the planet. Born in 1995, the Karrimor SF brand took the innovations and technologies from their already successful
civilian targeted product ranges and applied them to the military and law enforcement sectors. In today’s market, Karrimor SF are renowned for
their design ethos and manufacturing capabilities, with each product being carefully thought out and manufactured to the highest levels.
Operating with a mantra that states - “Inspiration in design, excellence in performance”, Karrimor realise the importance of equipment that
can successfully navigate through the range of different missions that may be tasked for completion. This understanding has put them in a
position where adventurers, explorers and bushcraft enthusiasts are applauding Karrimor for their attempts, with each individual bestowing on
Karrimor the ultimate compliment - continued support of the brand.

SABRE 30
KARRIMOR SF
A lightweight and effective day sack, the Sabre 30 includes ski guides on the
sides of the pack. The padded shoulder straps and back provides plenty of
comfort when load carrying. The coolmesh back system allows air to flow
between your back and the pack allowing for a more comfortable experience
in warmer climates or on a long trek. The main compartment is large enough
to accommodate everything you would expect from a mid-sized daypack and
its possible to place your water bottles into the elasticated side pockets. The
lid pocket is the ideal place to store your keys, phone, and other valuables. The
Sabre 30 is manufactured from KS60, a 600 Denier elastomeric polyurethane
(PU) coating, and a fluorocarbon durable water repellent polyester fabric.

SABRE 35
KARRIMOR SF
Small in stature, the lightweight and versatile Sabre 35 makes for the
perfect daypack when the end-user doesn’t need an assortment of items
to keep him operational over a multiple night deployment. The Sabre
35 includes two fixed 2.5 litre side pockets suitable for water bottles or
other items. Constructed from KS60, a 600 denier rip-stop fabric, the
Sabre 35 offers excellent tear and abrasion resistance. Furthermore, with
the inclusion of an elastomeric polyurethane coating and durable water
repellent coating, the Sabre 35 will ensure the end-users equipment remains
dry. The mixture of the smaller design of the Sabre 35 alongside the 600
Denier fabric it is manufactured in results in less weight to carry without a
detrimental effect on the end-user’s ability to operate in his or her AO.

SABRE 45
KARRIMOR SF
Karrimor have ensured that the Sabre 45 follows the design ethos shown
within all Karrimor products. Front and centre of these design features is
the F-Format internal frame, which can either be shaped to conform to
the user’s back profile or removed entirely. Furthermore, the Sabre 45 is
compatible with PLCE side pockets and various hydration systems, allowing
the end-user to scale his load-bearing capabilities if needed. To ensure the
Sabre 45 is durable, Karrimor have appropriated a 1000-denier Nylon fabric
known as KS100e*, which has been coated with a Silicone/PU elastomer
for improved tear strength and flex resistance. Additionally, each product is
finished with a fluorocarbon durable water repellent. *Camouflage models are
manufactured using a 500-denier Infra-Red Reflective (IRR) fabric instead.

The Sabre 75 has a cool-mesh back with removable F-Format internal frame
which can be formed to the users back profile. With crampon loops and ice
axe holders, the Sabre 75 was designed for mountaineering although many
other uses exist. Ideal for shorter durations, the Sabre 75 also has the
capacity for extended use. PLCE side pockets and hydration systems may
also be attached. The Sabre 75 is manufactured in KS100e, a durable 1000
Denier Nylon fabric which offers both excellent tear and abrasion resistance.
To ensure the Sabre 75 can handle the elements, the pack makes use of an
elastomeric polyurethane coating alongside a durable water repellent on the
outer face to protect the end-user’s belongings from wet weather. Camouflage
variants are manufactured from a 500D Infra-Red Reflective fabric.

SABRE 60-100
KARRIMOR SF
Highly respected amongst extreme users for its sheer versatility. The Sabre
60-100 includes the SA (size adjustable) back system allowing on-the-back
and on-the-move adjustments to reduce muscle fatigue. The dividable main
compartment and hooped lower entry zip allows easy access to equipment
stored at the bottom of the rucsac. PLCE side pockets and hydration
systems may also be attached. Like the Sabre 45 and 90, the Sabre 60-100
makes use of the KS100e material, a 1000 Denier Nylon fabric which offers
brilliant tear and abrasion resistance, alongside a waterproof treatment.
Camouflage variants of the Sabre 60-100 are manufactured from a 500D
Infra-Red Reflective fabric.
