MBSS
THE REAL MARITIME BALLISTIC SURVIVAL SYSTEM OR MBSS PLATE CARRIER
WAS CUTTING EDGE GEAR FOR THE US SPECIAL FORCES AND IN PARTICULAR,
NAVY SEAL'S, BORN OUT OF A TRAINING EXERCISE TRAGEDY, SEVEN US
MARINES DROWNED AFTER THE CH-46 SEA KNIGHT DITCHED INTO THE OCEAN.
The investigation revealed that one of the major contributors to the fatalities was how heavy the
weight was of the assault equipment worn by the boarding party and the difficulty in rapid egress
from the helicopter giving birth to the Full Spectrum Body Armour system or FSBE.
FSBE 2 is an update to the original package that was produced in M81 camo and is a rather large
and comprehensive package or assault vests, with pouches and accessories, and includes one
particular MBSS plate carrier, which the US Navy Seals quickly snapped up.
The MBSS Plate Carrier is a lightweight and adjustable tactical vest, essentially a minimal plate
carrier consisting of two large plate bags that attach via shoulder and waist straps.

TYPICALLY WORN IN CONJUNCTION WITH A PACA LOW VIS VEST, THE

COMBINATION IS LIGHTWEIGHT AND FLEXIBLE, OFFERING THE USER A
HIGHLY MOBILE PLATFORM, IF NOT JUST A LITTLE LIMITED ON WHAT YOU
CAN CARRY. ONE OF THE BIG BENEFITS AT THE TIME WAS THE
PACA'S ABILITY TO CARRY BOTH SOFT AND HARD ARMOUR.
The LVC was developed by the military contractor PACA (Protective Apparel
Corporation of America, Inc.) in 2002. It was introduced in 2003 to the
SOCOM and the USMC. The LVC remained in service with the SOF for a long
time and was issued with the SBE II, MLCS, SFLC (it was replaced by Safariland's
lightweight body armour in 2006).

THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE

Produced and first seen in 1999, the first generation
MBSS was olive in colour and saw action during the Iraq
War as documented by photographs showing it being
worn by SEAL Team 3 operators at the Battle of Ramadi
in 2006 in conjunction with the MBAV.
The MBAV is a simple plate carrier supplied with a
sturdy front and backplate bag covered in MOLLE (ten
rows by six columns). Essentially this means you will
be able to mount three rifle mag pouches, plus a small
utility pouch and radio pouch to the front of the plate
carrier, along with an admin pouch up high on the front.
The backplate bag is reserved for packs and or other
pouches. However, to gain more space on the front plate
pocket, you could always add a MOLLE II triple mag
pouch that will allow you to double stack your pouches.

RADICAL REPLICA
Despite the MBSS being superseded in the real world, FLYYE Industries have brought this plate carrier right up to date by offering a Multicam version,
which does not exist in the real world, but does now in ours. This replica features military-spec stitching, hook-and-loops that can be used over 20,000
times, robust Duraflex quick release clips on the waist and shoulders, and large pockets on the front and the back of the vest for armour plates (these are
not included). The vest is made of incredibly durable Invista 1000D Cordura Nylon (PU treated), which is 300% times more resistant to the usual wear and
tear than standard Nylon. Moreover, the material is waterproof to 893.3 degrees, and no water will retain on its surface.

Warrior Assault Systems prides itself

they will formulate a basic idea. This will

LOW PROFILE CARRIER V2 - LASER CUT

The Warrior Assault Systems Low Profile Carrier V2 is by no means a new
product, in fact, you’ll have no doubt see our take on both the Low Profile
Carrier V1 and Low Profile Carrier V2 in previous issues. While both
carriers employ different designations, the carriers are virtually identical,
with the difference being the choice of Cummerbund, with the V1 using a
solid-side variant and the V2 using a laddered variant. Both plate carriers
have been widely praised and are currently in use with a number of
armed forces contingents around the world.
However, not one to rest on their laurels, Warrior Assault Systems have
gone back to the LPC for a third time, making use of laser-cut materials
to lighten the weight carried by the end user. Designed with direct input
from serving operators within the SF community, the laser cut LPC
incorporates many new features that combine to make it one of the best
carriers on the market today.
The Low Profile Carrier utilises state of the art materials to reduce
overall signature and weight. The LPC V2 DFP M4 comes as standard with
a a free MOLLE front flap that allows the attachment of a full range of
MOLLE pouches. The panel is held in place by 2 vertical QASM clips, and
hook and loop which allows the panel to be removed and replaced with
a wide variety of preconfigured detachable panels that are both weapon
and mission specific.
The laser cut LPC features Warrior Assault Systems new air vent
thermo pads, which allow heat to evaporate from the body and increased
airflow to assist in cooling. The thermo pad also helps to decrease the
back-plate signature associated with ballistic impact and trauma. The
ultra-lightweight minimal carrier is available in 2 styles. The V1 variant
comes with MOLLE Solid Side cummerbunds, which can accommodate
both soft armour and hard side plates for additional protection if
required. The V2 variant comes with Ladder Side Cummerbunds which are
slimmer and lighter. The V2 has a reduced side profile and offers greater
ventilation and increased comfort.
The LPC incorporates Warrior’s speed clip system, which allows
very rapid removal of the carrier on a day-to-day basis, but also in an
emergency, no complicated cables to worry about, and reassembly takes
seconds. Additional features include a large upper integrated admin
pocket, with compartmented elastic loops for storage of a variety of gear,
and seamless integration with Warrior’s selection of back panels.

FEATURES
■ The Low Profile Carrier from Warrior Assault Systems has seen
somewhat of a facelift with this rendition of the plate carrier,
incorporating laser cutting technology to reduce the weight footprint
of the carrier.

■ The air vent thermo pads placed on the front and back of the plate
carrier aid in heat management, allowing heat to evaporate from the
body while increasing airflow to assist in cooling. This is paramount in
today’s area of operations.

■ Warrior Assault Systems’ speed clip system allows for the rapid
removal of the carrier on a day-to-day basis, allowing the end user to
remove the plate carrier in a matter of seconds; which can be vital in
emergency situations.

■ The front of the plate carrier includes a plethora of design

features, including quick clips to allow for the use of interchangeable
front panels and a large admin pocket, which is perfect for storing
important equipment.

■ The Low Profile Carrier makes use of the highest quality materials,
including 500-denier Nylon, US mil-spec nylon thread; which is treated
against UV and mildew damage, and ITW military rated clips.

GETTING IT BATTLE READY

One question we're asked a lot when it comes
to plate carrier reviews is how we personally
would set them up. By this, we mean what
pouches we would incorporate into our
load-outs, and where exactly we would place each
pouch. Now, in regard to placement, this is something only you
can do. There are a number of variables in place when it comes
to setting up a plate carrier for yourself; such as whether you're
right or left handed, what your role within your specific airsoft
team is, or even something as simple as what Armed Forces' you
are trying to replicate.

ASSAULTERS BACK PANEL MK1

The Laser Cut Assaulters Back Panel (ABP), has been designed to be
compatible with the full range of Warriors Laser Cut LPC Carrier can also be
used with their Elite Ops range of carriers, (DCS, RPC, LPC and QRC).
The ABP quickly zips on to the rear of the carrier via our MOLLE zip adapter
kit, (included). The adapter kit comprises a left and a right-sided vertical zip
panel, simply MOLLE each adapter to the rear sides of the carrier and zip the
panel to the adapters.
The MK1 variant of the Assaulters Back Panel utilises the top section of the
ABP panel and comes with our removable Laser Cut adjustable Triple 40mm
pouch, ideal for storage of pyrotechnics or baton rounds. The lower section has
our removable Laser Cut fast pull horizontal medic pouch. The Assaulters Panel
comes with an internal hydration compartment and a pull-out lower pocket for
carriage of MOE gear such as, expandable hammers, hooligan bars and bolt cutters.

DETACHABLE TRIPLE BUNGEE

5.56 MAGAZINE PANEL
The Laser Cut Detachable Triple 5.56 Mag Pouch is a
removable Front Panel which attaches to the front of
Warriors Laser Cut LPC Plate Carrier, via Velcro and 2
Vertical SQM clips. The DFP-TB-556P holds 3 x 5.56mm
x 45mm mags, and are held in place via bungee
retention cord, Hypalon lining provides additional mag
retention when bungee safety is removed. Each front
panel pouch has 4 MOLLE slots externally, allowing
the attachment of additional pouches such as pistol
mag pouches, CAT pouch or Multitool pouch.

FINAL THOUGHTS
In our personal opinion, the Warrior Assault Systems Laser Cut range is well on
its way to being deemed to sit in the upper echelons of plate carriers. Putting
build quality and features to one side (all of which are extremely high quality),
the equipment works perfectly. A number of the Airsoft International team make
use of the Laser Cut system at this point, many of which have ditched offerings
from 'Gucci' American manufacturers such as Crye Precision, Mayflower or Ferro
Concepts. With the Laser Cut range, Warrior Assault Systems have demonstrated
that high quality equipment doesn't always have to cost a premium. That's not
to say that the Laser Cut range is 'cheap'; it's not. However, it is far cheaper than
the other aforementioned brands, and the build quality is as good, if not better in
some cases.
Personally, I'm yet to get out onto the skirmish field with the Laser-Cut Low
Profile Carrier, however, the AI500 is right around the corner, and you can bet I'll
be doing my usual running around in real world plates, so that will be the real test
for the LPC when compared to the others within the AI office who make use of it.
Personally, I cannot wait, and will no doubt report back once that's happened!

CAMOUFLAGE 101
We should all know by now that camouflage is designed
to fool the eye of the onlooker via several disorientating
techniques and tricks. The colours help blend the wearer
in amongst the background and the disruptive
patterning helps to baffle and confuse the viewer by
"breaking up the outline" and almost blurring the
shape of familiar figures and shapes.
As such, camouflage patterns can come
coloured in numerous schemes to fit different
environments better. You don't have to
look far to see the relationship between
the UK's own DPM and the Desert
DPM variant, which is essentially two
differently coloured patterns tuned
specifically for the environment.

CRITICAL KRYPTEK
Instead of just one or two coloured
patterns, the Kryptek family consists
of no less than ten individually
tailored colour schemes, each
suited to a slightly different
environment. The pattern itself is
highly distinctive and almost utilises
psychedelic qualities to further confuse
any potential onlookers.

“KRYPTEK UTILISES A

MANDRAKE
As you may well know if you are acquainted with the series of
Harry Potter books or films, the Mandrake is a plant commonly
associated with myth and superstition. This is because they contain a
hallucinogenic substance, and also their root formations often form
in the shape of a human figure, making the name quite fitting for
the bizarre, twisted and disorienting shapes of a camouflage pattern
made to blend in, in the deep, dark woods.
What we get in this pattern is a murky green, being and dark brown
mottled background which probably wouldn't look all that dissimilar
to the A-TACS FG pattern or indeed the old "Rebels on Endor”
costumes from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi if it wasn’t for the crazy
webbed shapes over the top. Up close these shapes don’t really look
like anything at all other than a slightly nauseating hallucination, but
as you back away, they tend to “cluster” and form into suggestions
of leaves, palm fronds and tree bark all without really being anything
like them. It's an effective ruse that also has the added benefit of
looking pretty cool at the same time!
Whether you want to wear Kryptek Mandrake or any of the other
patterns in the family for concealment or simply to set you apart from
the crowd, you’ll want some solid, skirmish worthy gear.

UNIFORM
As usual, we kick off with a uniform selection and this time around we have
gone with Helikon’s new CPU or "Combat Patrol Uniform" set. Priced from
£35.50 for plain coloured CPU shirts and the same again for the trousers,
the uniform is designed to be both hard-wearing and also comfortable.
Reinforcements and cleverly stitched gussets and expansion
bellows provide an active fit and no hindrance to movement
whilst retaining an all-round durable build. The price for
each garment in genuine Kryptek Mandrake patterned
material rises to £76.00 per piece, but for this, you can
ensure high-quality material and also a permanent,
fade-resistant patterning, unlike the inferior copied
patterns you'll find on the market.

DRAGON EGG
Direct Action has specified the Dragon Egg with a deep, rubberised air-mesh
padding on the back of the bag, providing comfort and ventilation when
wearing for long periods and contoured shoulder straps with a sternum
stabiliser strap.
In addition to the common compression straps on the outside of the back
which assist in securing the load, there are tough-stitched nylon "daisy chain"
loops which can be used to lash things to the pack or clip-on carabiners
in an ad-hoc fashion. These are arranged to make it possible to lace up a
shock-cord mesh on the front of the pack if required.
As with the rest of the range of Direct Action packs, the Dragon Egg pack is
flawlessly constructed from 500d Cordura material with high quality polymer
hardware and YKK zippers meaning the chances of it letting you down really
are slim to none.

LOAD-CARRYING
In light of the uniform being a little bulky to wear
under a full plate carrier, we've opted for a chest rig
in this instance. Made by Condor Outdoor, the Recon
Chest rig does exactly what it says on the tin. It's ideal
for ranging out ahead of the rest of the team, loaded
up and ready to pin down the enemy. It has a fixed
pouch layout, but MOLLE space on either side gives you
adaptability. In the case of this rig, we have fitted the
right-hand panel with a Fobus MOLLE holster mount
for a Glock 19. The left-hand side has been left open
because the integrated radio pouch has been used to
hold our TRI PRC-152 radio handset.
The Recon Rig is a great piece of kit for the price and
can accept M4 or AK type magazines in the six main
pouches. There are also six smaller pouches across the
front, all with removable flaps. These can be used for
pistol magazines or alternatively smokes or bangs. The
strap system is great, with plenty of adjustability and
neat velcro tie-downs to take up any slack webbing,
meaning you don't need to trim or tape up the rig.

£57.99 CONDOR OUTDOOR

RECON CHEST RIG
This quality chest rig offers the most effective way of carrying a field load on
the chest. It features six single pistol and three double stacker/Kangaroo type

utility pocket, one mesh pocket on the back, and two open-top mag pouches
(one on each side), all easily accessible from the top. Single pistol ammo
pockets include adjustable Velcro openings with pull tabs, whereas stacked
pockets include multiple adjustable paracords with 1x2 MOLLE straps.

THE WHOLE RIG IS FULLY ADJUSTABLE AND ADAPTABLE TO

ANY HEIGHT AND CHEST SIZE. IT FEATURES PADDED CROSS-

Suppose you break it down to the
minimums you’re going to need for a
skirmish field. In that case, it's essentially
something to shoot, eye pro, a magazine
carrier of some description, clothing,
gloves and boots. It's a lot to take in and
even harder to find the right choice for
you, but that's where we come in as we
talk you through a basic loadout in the
hope that we will inspire you to think a
little bit outside the box and come up with
your own unique look on the skirmish field
this spring/summer.
Taking our inspiration from believe it or
not US Navy SEAL, this particular loadout
could easily fall into the "Gun for Hire"
category, mercenary or even PMC role that
all have a place on the skirmish field and
a particular advantage in an urban arena,
where a lightweight, high-speed, low drag,
uncomplicated loadout is the way to go.

OFF T HE PEG
£33.95 TROUSERS
TEESAR - BATTLE DRESS UNIFORM
There's nothing special about the clothes that we used with this project, most of them are "off the peg" items.
The pants are a pair of Battle Dress Uniform trousers from Teesar - made of highly breathable Cotton Ripstop
material, which is extremely hard wearing and the most durable material you can get combat clothing in. The key
to their durability lies in the fact that they are Ripstop fabrics, which is woven fabrics often made of nylon, using
a reinforcing technique that makes them more resistant to tearing and ripping. Stronger (and often thicker)
reinforcement yarns are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern into the garment's main material.
The advantage of Ripstop over more traditional materials is the favourable strength-to-weight ratio and that
small tears cannot easily spread. Fibres used to make ripstop include cotton, silk, polyester, and polypropylene,
with nylon content often limited to the crosshatched threads that make it tear-resistant. The other stand-out
point is the reinforced seat and knees that will undoubtedly help on a skirmish field.

£40.00 SHIRT
CRAGHOPPERS KIWI
The shirt we used is nothing more than a "Duty Shirt".
Virtually every tactical gear clothing brand will have
one in its catalogue. It just so happened that we had
a Craghoppers version kicking around in our gear
locker. It's branded as a relaxed, easy-care trail
shirt that has been constructed from recycled,
sun-protective* and insect bite-proof polyester
cotton for reliable, effective performance in
the outdoors. Approximately 19 bottles were
recycled to make this product and in this day
and age, I think you would all agree is a fantastic
feat in its own right. The shirt also benefits from
what Crachoppers refer to as a “Solarshield collar"
and the ability to wash and wear, meaning no ironing!

EYE PROTECTION
Airsoft guns are relatively harmless and even from close range, one within the power limits
of the UK will leave you with nothing more than a trivial injury. This is true for your entire
body except 2 points, your eyes.
At just one joule (328fps on a 0.2g BB) an airsoft gun discharges a round with enough
energy to pop your eyeball like a juicy cherry tomato. If that happens, it’s game over.
Your eye will not heal and you will be blinded for good. Given that you only have two
eyes, this is something you MUST avoid and it is easily done. Ballistic goggles
and glasses do the job and provided they meet or exceed the relevant
standard (In Europe this in EN166), they will be as good as

POUCHES FOR DAYS!

This vest is big with many pouches, which also means a lot of capacity to
carry your kit onto the skirmish field that you really don't need. Because
there isn't any MOLLE in sight, the pouches are not movable, but you
really don't have to worry about the pouches' position or importance as
they are right where you need them. You can see that a huge amount
of thought has gone into the vest. It not only distributes the weight
around your torso, but every pouch is also accessible and easy to use.
The large side utility pouches sit nicely just above your hips, out
of the way of your arms, whilst the ammo pouches sit right where
you need them on the front of the vest. In fact, the front of
the rig gives you as much capacity as two chest rigs. The mag
pouches are all doubles, with dividers to add retention, and
like everything on this rig are closed top, so you won't have
to worry about losing items. It has an impressive 12 mag
capacity in total, which means you can adopt one if not
two mag pouches to carry a radio and other essentials.

FOR DUMMIES
IF YOU'RE ANYTHING LIKE ME, THE THOUGHT OF TAKING YOUR AIRSOFT GUN APART AND DOING
WORK ON THEM YOURSELF IS A DAUNTING TASK. YOU NEED ONLY ASK A MEMBER OF THE AI
TEAM TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF GUNS I'VE TAKEN TO THEM IN PIECES TO ATTEST
TO THAT FACT -- ONE OF THE WORST WAS SNAPPING AN UPPER RECEIVER IN HALF TRYING TO
REMOVE A FRONT-END (APPARENTLY APPLYING BRUTE FORCE IS NOT THE WAY TO DO THINGS!).
Since then though, I set out on the mission to teach myself how to do basic upgrade and maintenance work on my
own AEGs, with the idea of being able to pass that knowledge onto those, who like me, are almost scared to work on
their pride and joy. We'll be starting with the very basics, looking at the basic anatomy of an airsoft gun, and from
there will look towards how exactly you make basic changes such as installing a new motor, a new barrel and so on.
The aim of this series of articles is that by the end of the series, you'll be able to do a lot of work on your rifle
yourself, and in turn, save yourself a lot of money, and a lot of waiting for your rifle to come back from your local
gun tech. With this said though, if you are still somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of working on your rifle,
going to the professionals is probably your best port of call -- better to spend out a little to get the work done you
want, instead of spending a lot to fix the problems you've created for yourself.

THE ANATOMY OF A GEARBOX

Like all mechanical products, an airsoft gearbox can seem a little overwhelming at first. With a range of moving parts, one item not seated correctly
can spell disaster, soon leaving you in a position where you're taking your beloved airsoft gun to your local shop in parts because you're not quite
sure what you've done. That said, in reality the airsoft gearbox is not that complicated; and with a little bit of knowledge you'll soon find yourself
accustomed to the intricacies of a range of different parts, allowing you to not only maintain your airsoft gun, but also repair and upgrade it when
needed.

WHAT THEY DO. THEN OVER THE
NEXT FEW MONTHS, WE'LL WALK
YOU THROUGH THE VARIOUS

HOW EXACTLY YOU DO THEM!

with working with your airsoft gun, take it

We could kick off this review with the fact that the Warsport LVOA-C by Krytac is just another M4 AEG.
Despite numerous moans from a rather vocal group, it seems the number of detractors is in a minority
because AEG M4 replicas are still the bread and butter of most players’ arsenals and most retailers
report they outsell anything else by at least 3:1.
Sure, you have your kooky AK variants, obscure submachine guns and other rarities out there
but the M4 platform is familiar, useable and well-supported; the same can be said for real steel
firearms and airsoft guns. Despite you being able to use a lot of the accessories and magazines
you might already own it’s important to note that at the core of any Krytac gun, you don’t
have JUST a regular M4, you have something far more intelligently put together and a lot
more advanced than your based AEG, an ageing and somewhat ailing design.
