Research Title:

Determinants on the Idealistic and Practical Educational Expectations of Grade-3 Students

Research Rationale:

Although the social stratification of educational expectations is well known for parents and
teenagers, the viewpoint of children is largely overlooked by current research on educational
inequality. To learn more about the role of children in the emergence and replication of social
inequalities during elementary school, this study will investigate the educational expectations of
children. This exploratory research aims to identify determinants of the idealistic and practical
expectations of young students, based on the Wisconsin model, rational choice methods, and cultural
reproduction theory. The results of this study will be of great help to the stakeholders of the chosen
school in understanding the existing problems in the involved institution in relevant to the occurring
educational inequalities.

Research Questions:

Few studies have considered the viewpoint of students on the emergence of educational inequality
in elementary education however, in this early stage of schooling, very little is known about the
formation of the educational ambitions of students. With that being said, this research will be
conducted to answer the following questions:

1. What are the determinants of students’ idealistic and realistic educational aspirations in
elementary level?
2. Is there a significant difference between the students’ idealistic and realistic educational
aspirations?

Proposed Innovation/Intervention/Strategy:

This research will be conducted to investigate the problem relevant to educational inequalities
which is not clearly defined in some of the researches. This research study will be conducted to have a
better understanding of the existing problem through examining the realistic and idealistic aspirations
of the elementary students in the school that will be chosen.

Research Method:

This study will be using data from the National National Educational Panel Study (NEPS): Starting
Cohort Kindergarten, https://doi.org/10.5157/NEPS:SC2:6.0.0 from 2008 to 2013. These data will be
obtained to serve as the Framework Program for the Promotion of Scientific Educational Research
financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) which will the current
research be based from. In addition, analytical strategy will be used to derive a set of prospective
predictors from the proposed theoretical frameworks and previous results on adolescents’ aspirations,
to test their applicability to third-grade students’ idealistic and realistic aspirations.

Target Subjects:

This research study will be investigating the grade 3 pupils in different sections, of Sinangguyan
Elementary School, Don Carlos, Bukidnon.

Time Frame:

This research study shall be conducted and shall be completed within two (2) to three (3) months in
the next Academic Year.
