Ans Victims of the riots in Delhi being removed from the streets in 1947.Nearly two or three million people died including women, men and children. Q. Why was this year called a terrible year? (5) Ans This year was called terrible year because there was great bloodshed. Many people were killed.Several people were made homeless, both India and Pakistan faced enormous problems. Some of these refugees were so distressed by their hardships that they turned on the local population of different religion. Q. Describe in detail the refugee crisis and accommodation. Ans In the years immediately before partition, there was widespread violence between the Muslim and the non-Muslims communities across India. When the boundary Award was announced in August 1947, things became even worse.Millions of people found themselves living in the wrong country and became victims of communal attacks. The only answer was for muslims to move into India. So began what perhaps was the largest migration ever witnessed in the history of mankind. The violence was sometimes orchestrated by the local authorities and many Muslim historians believe that hindus and Sikhs had an organized programme for the massacre of muslim refugees. In the non Muslim princely states there were examples of state troops being used to support attacks on Muslims.Nearly 20 million people were made homeless and both India and Pakistan faced enormous problems as huge numbers of refugees fled to them for safety.Karachi alone received nearly two million refugees in 1947.Not surprisingly,it was extremely difficult for these people to be accommodated.Pakistan in particular,as a new and not wealthy country, did not have the necessary facilities to house millions of new citizens.By the end of 1947, India and Pakistan were so concerned about the communal violence that they began to cooperate in trying to control it.
