CASE SCENARIO

Alicia is a 7 years old child studying in a public school. Her school was concerned
because she was not able to focus on class instruction and tasks. She has particular problems
with writing and becomes frustrated when she had mistakes.
She is not interested in making friends and seems to have her own world. She has a focus
on “Hannah Montana”. She talks about this and does not tolerate interruption. Sometimes she is
not responsive to her name being called. She seldom chats and responds without looking at
people. She spends 1-2 hours daily in her own world re-enacting Hannah Montana with actions.
Alicia’s parents decided to enroll the child in a STAC to help her modify and improve her
behavior. She has been in this center for 3 months spending an hour per day for her therapy
sessions.

TASK/ACTIVITY
Instruction: Based on the scenario above, answer the following questions.

1. Is Alicia a case of Autism?

For me, Alicia has a case of autism.

2. If yes, what signs and symptoms were presented? If no, what is her case?
In the case of Alicia, there were signs and symptoms that she has an autism and
these are the following: She has social issues; she prefers to be alone, to play alone,
usually avoids eye contact, she does not share interests with others, she prefers not to be
comforted by others during distress, and has a trouble understanding other people’s
feelings. On the other hand, when it comes to her communication skills it seems to be
different because she is not responsive, she seldom chats and responds without looking at
people. We all know that some people with ASD say only one word at a time that’s why.
Thirdly, when it comes to her interests and behavior it was unusual, because she often
experienced temper tantrums especially when she had particular problems with writing
and later on becomes frustrated, also unusual mood or emotional reactions, and was
obsessive interest with Hannah Montana.

3. What forms of therapy will you suggest to Alicia’s parents?

There are certain forms of therapy that I can suggest to Alicia’s parents, this
would be helpful for Alicia’s treatment, and these are the following: Behavioral therapy,
we all know that behavior is also a type of communication, by the help of this therapy it
teaches them more appropriate ways to communicate their needs; Speech therapy, this
will help their child address a variety of communication-related issues depending on their
child’s specific needs; Occupational therapy, this will help their child become more
independent in daily living activities, this can also provide them with guidance; Sensory-
integration therapy, this one is type of occupational therapy, by the help of this it teach
your child to process anxiety-producing triggers; Social skills therapy, teaches their child
the skills she need to interact with others, including conversation and problem-solving
skills.

4. As a student nurse, will you be able to handle this type of patient? How?
Of course, as a student nurse I would be able to handle a patient with autism. By
learning how to be capable enough of finding out strategies by which an individual
patient and their family will benefit, to be familiar with the techniques that are commonly
used to improve communication, behavior, and social skills. Another important role as a
student nurse is to guide the patient about self-care, hygiene, and safety. Also, by
providing encouragement, boosting passion by giving positive supplement to the child,
implementing basic nursing interventions to optimize the quality of care.
