Mr. Jones has a total of 25 chickens and cows on

his farm. How many of each does he have if all
together there are 76 feet?

Step 1: Understand the Problem

There are a total of 25 chicken and cows combined and when put
together, there are 76 feet. The problem is to determine how many
cows and chickens does he have individually.

Step 2: Devise a plan to solve the problem

Use a variable to represent the unknown which is x and y. Then we will make
the equations out of the problem. Next, derive the equation so that we can use
it to substitute and find y and then using the second equation, we can
substitute the derived equation. As we found the y, we can now use the first
equation to find the x. To check our answer we will substitute it to the
equation.

Step 3: Carry out the plan

Use a variable to represent the unknown.
x= number of chickens
y= number of cows
76= total number of animal's feet
25= total number of animals
Make the equations out of the problem.

First Equation: x+y = 25

Second Equation: 2x+4y= 76

Derive the equation so that we can use it to substitute and find y.

x+y=25 → x=25 - y

Using the second equation, we can substitute the derived equation.

2x+4y=76
2(25-y)+4y=76
50-2y+4y=76
2y=76-50
2y 26
=
2 2
y=13

As we found the y, we can now use the first equation to find the x.

x+y=25
x+13=25
x=25-13
x=12

Step 4: Check out the answer

We can check if the answers are right by substituting it to the equations

x+y=25 2x+4y=76 → 2(12)+4(13)=76

12+13=25 24+52=76
25=25 76=76
