ACTIVITY 1

 The most significant feature of an iceberg that is in common with all cultures
is that most of it is under the water and we can only see about 10-15 percent
above the surface and the rest of it is a bit of mystery
 We know iceberg is there, we just can’t observe it easily
 When we visit a country for the first time, we’ll notice lots of small
differences in how people dress, food they eat, music they listen to, and how
they behave or do things. These are our observations we made by using our
five senses. To be more specific, the following are what we can see above
the surface of a culture more often at first time:
Language- we cannot understand it, but we can hear it and see it
Arts
Customs/Traditions
Religion
Food
Dress
Institution
Manners
 Tourists interact with foreign people at the following aspects mentioned
above.
 But for deeper understanding of a culture, then we must take a plunge just
like an iceberg to know the link between above and below the surface of
culture.
 As we take deeper, we find things people can think about and can be
probably describe or explain using the words of their language:
Beliefs- fundamental to how a culture views institutions such as education,
science, history, politics and all its other institutions
Ideals- Are generally agreed upon understanding of what is best for the
individual and society as a whole
Norms- behaviors and actions of people which are considered by the society
as the standard or normal thing to do within the culture
Roles- the basic function of an individual within the culture that depends in
their individuality aspect such as in their gender, economic status, job and
personality.
Concepts- ideas and general ways which people think about that includes the
concept of family, individuality, time etc
 Myths- old stories that contains meta truth vital to our reality but on a level
beyond descriptive factual language.
 Myths provide the link to the deepest depth of the iceberg (culture) because
down there, language is not capable of completely describing the abstract
nature of what we find.
 At the deepest levels of the cultural iceberg are the emotions and thoughts
that people generally have which is harder to understand. Culture must rely
on the arts to give insights or clues
To help us understand what is going on and explore the meaning of such
things like: values, desires, assumptions, tastes and attitudes.
 Just like the water surrounding an iceberg, there are also things that
influence a culture from the outside. These are things over which a culture
has no control.
 Sometimes, climate and geography bring various effects to an iceberg which
is like culture, the other factors surrounding it such as geography, climate
have effect to the way people behave and changes over time. These also
represents the challenges a culture face as days goes by. Technology and
innovation of communication had also been one of the most significant
factors affecting cultures.
 Iceberg is the metaphor of a culture.
