Assignment 1 - Regular Assignment – A Group Debate (Debate) (40%)

Assignment Details
Introduction
This element makes a significant contribution to your assessment (40%) and you will
therefore need to consider carefully what the basic requirements are. You will work in groups
to have a debate on the given theme. Groups of 4-5 students will take sides in one of the
debates scheduled for Week 6. Each group has 10 minutes to present their positions, five
minutes to present rebuttals, 5 minutes for Q&A, and one-minute closing statement. Each
student will provide a summary of the Group Presentation and all members of the group will
submit identical Group Summary Presentations (with names and student IDs of all members
of the group, as well as references in line with APA guidelines and the name of your seminar
lecturer). Synthesis of the Debate (Report) will have to be submitted electronically in week 6,
by 2pm. The format of the report and rubric to indicate the learning outcomes and the
weightage for each criterion will be discussed and also uploaded for your reference.

Your Group Debates will take place in week 6. Your lecturer will give you the date, location
and time slots for the debates. The group debates will be recorded and you are all expected
to dress formally and to be on time.

The groups should address the question:

Many businesses are facing a challenging time during the pandemic to be sustainable
and staying relevant. Fast Moving Consumer Goods brands which used to have a
huge base of loyal customers seems to be fading away during the movement control
order (MCO) period as there is disruption in the supply chain.

The New Marketing Order : Digital marketing does not require brand loyalty ?

Search for academic Journals to support your stance of arguments.

The groups should address the question:
Odd number groups (1, 3, 5, and 7) will be required to support the motion

Even number-groups (2, 4, 6, and 8) will be required to Oppose the motion

All groups are expected to reflect on "How will marketers create, manage, communicate
and deliver superior customer value in this scenario?" in relation to the development of
the events they present.

I. Your Position (arguments for the motion): Present a series of relevant arguments in
support of your 'view' or 'team line' and use this to impress upon the audience a basic
statement of why the proposition is true - 10 minutes.

II. Rebuttals: Following each presentation, the opposition is given an immediate chance to
rebut (or to critique) their opponent's main arguments. The rebuttal should be a direct reply
to the opposition paper (and arguments) and NOT a pre-prepared statement. In rebutting
you should be Logical, Selective and Professional - 5 minutes.

III. Questions & Answers: Teams can then ask each other targeted questions (perhaps on
the detail of their respective positions and rebuttals, or in pursuit of clarity). Your Tutor will
attempt to ensure balance during this phase and offer pause for teams to frame their final
questions to the opposing team - 5 minutes.

IV. Closing Statements: Each team will make a brief closing statement. You are expected to
present a clear and confident statement as to the merits of your team's arguments, including
a reflection on the debate itself - 1minute.

Additional independent research is highly recommended in order to build the case for your
debating stance.

Assessing the Debates

•Matter: The substance of your arguments, your rebuttals, your 'answers' to questions and
the quality of any arguments/examples that you use.
•Method: How you organise what you say and the group's overall contribution in terms of
team work (planning, unity and logic), structure and collaboration.
•Manner: How you present what you say both in the presentation and the 'discussion' stages
that follow: speaker's notes, materials, verbal/non-verbal skills.
At the end of the debate the Tutor will provide comments on how each group performed in
the debate.
