ValueJet & DrafStation Series


New MSA tool 4.1.5.0

Dear Customer,

There is a new Mutoh Service Assistant tool (MSA tool version: 4.1.5.0) for the ValueJet and DrafStation
series printers.
Please read this Technical Information Bulletin to know what the new features are, which items have been
changed and which bug fixes have been made.

1 Changed items

Application start-up
Step 1: Download the MSA tool from Mutoh’s firmware download site.
Step 2: Copy all files to one and the same folder on your pc.
Step 3: Double click on Mutoh Service Assistance.exe.
 The application tries to connect to a printer. If this does not work, you will see the
following message:

 Choose No to start the application. You can change the printer IP address later on.

Language selection
The application supports several languages. To switch languages, go to Setup and choose
Language.

When selecting a language, you will get following message:

After restarting the program, the selected language will be used.

Note
 In case the connection can’t be established the following actions should be
performed:
 Switch off Firewall
 Switch off Anti virus
 Switch off wireless network adaptor

2 Operation mode
The application supports two modes: “User mode” and “Technician mode”. Some features are
only available in “technician mode”.

At start-up, User mode is active.


Depending if you are connected to a printer or not, a different window will appear.

To switch to technician mode, follow these steps:


Step 1: Click Help ==> Version
Step 2: In the Version information box, double click the Mutoh logo”, then double click the “MSA”
logo and then press OK.

Step 3: After clicking OK, the main window appears. Then double click the Mutoh logo in the
lower right corner.

Step 4: Enter user name and password:


 Username: Europe_M
 Password: ^@.g@-

Step 5: After clicking the login button, a new window appears.

3 Connecting to a printer
Step 1: Choose Setup ==> Option.
Step 2: The following window appears:

Step 3: Enter the IP address of the printer. If you do not choose the printer model, the
application can detect it (Choose Setup ==> Automatic printer model selection if
necessary). If you choose not to let the program decide, set the correct printer model.
Step 4: If you have changed the IP address, the following question appears:

Step 5: Click Yes to let the application determine the printer type.
Step 6: When the IP address and printer model are correctly set, the application can be used.

4 Date and time update (technician mode only)


This feature will set the printer's clock to the date and time of the computer running MSA tool.
Step 1: Start the printer in board manager mode (see service manual for more information).
Step 2: On the MSA tool, click the Date and Time Update button.
Step 3: Click the Ok button.
Step 4: The application asks for confirmation:

Step 5: Afterwards, the application informs you of the result.


Step 6: The date and time will appear on the printers’s operation panel.

5 User type edit
The ValueJet can store settings for different media types. This feature allows you to change this
to more meaningful names (e.g. “Banner”, “Vinyl”, …).

Step 1: First, start the printer in normal user mode.


Step 2: On the MSA tool, click UserType Edit.
Step 3: The following window appears:

Step 4: Click Download to read the media type names from the printer.
Step 5: A confirmation window appears. Click OK to start download the settings.
Step 6: When the download finishes, a new window appears. You can now type over the
previous names to change them.

Step 7: Press Upload to save the new names to the printer.


Step 8: A new confirmation window appears. Press OK to start uploading.
Step 9: If the upload finishes, a new window appears. Click OK to confirm.
Step 10: Press Cancel to close the UserType Edit window.

6 Error Log Receive
Using this feature, you can view a history of fatal errors the printer has encountered.
Step 1: After clicking Error Log Receive, a new window appears:

Step 2: Choose Operation ==> Error Log download or click the button in the statusbar.
Step 3: A new confirmation window appears. Click OK.
Step 4: A history of errors appears in the window:

Step 5: You can use the Save and Open features to save the history to a file or to review a
previously saved history.

7 Mainboard firmware update
Step 1: Start the printer in board manager mode.
Step 2: On the MSA tool, click “Main F/W Update”.
Step 3: An open file window appears, browse to the file you want to install.
Step 4: After clicking the Open button, a confirmation window appears.
Step 5: A progress window appears:

Step 6: When the transfer is done, a new window appears warning you to leave the printer on
until the update is completed.

8 Heater controller firmware update


Similar to the mainboard F/W update, you can also update the firmware of the heater controller
board.
Step 1: Start the printer in board manager mode.
Step 2: On the MSA tool, click Main F/W Update.
Step 3: An open file dialogue window appears. Browse to the file you want to load.
Step 4: After clicking the Open button, a confirmation window appears.
Step 5: A progress window will appear during sending.

Step 6: When the transfer is done, a new window appears warning you to leave the printer on
until the update is completed.

9 Parameter Receive (technician mode only)
This feature allows you to make a backup of the printer's settings. It works in both board
manager mode and normal user mode.
Step 1: Click Parameter Download.
Step 2: A confirmation window appears, click OK.
Step 3: The MSA tool starts downloading the parameters.
Step 4: After downloading, a confirmation window appears.

Step 5: Then, the application will ask you where to save the parameters:

Step 6: The saved file can later be used to restore the settings to the machine (see next item).

10 Parameter upload (technician only)
Using this feature, you can restore a parameter file made according to the previous instructions.
Step 1: Start the printer in board manager mode.
Step 2: Select Parameter Upload.
Step 3: A new window appears.

Step 4: Choose the correct backup file to restore.


Step 5: A confirmation window appears. Click OK if you are sure.
Step 6: Once the parameter upload is complete, a new window appears. Click OK.

13 Diagnostic mode (technician mode only)
This feature can be used to monitor various aspects of the printer's operation.
Step 1: Start the printer in normal user mode.
Step 2: On the MSA tool, click diagnostics mode.
Step 3: A new window appears:

Step 4: You can now choose different settings.

Ink system.

 Monitor the presence of cartridges (in this example, all cartridges are present), sub
tank sensors (if present), and head temperature.

Smart chip information

 Provides detailed information about the cartridge chips.

Heater system

 Provides detailed information about the heater system.

Head temperature shift monitoring

 This allows you to monitor the temperature of the print head in time.

Head temperature shift logging

 This allows you to log and store the data for the temperature shift of the print head in
time.

14 Individual code download


Download .mpi file. This file contains ink / smart chip related parameters. To be sent to Mutoh
Service Dpt. in case some parameter need to be changed.

15 Authorization code upload


Upload .ulk file. This file contains ink / smart chip related parameters. To be uploaded to the
printer after receipt of this file from Mutoh service Dpt.

16 Setup list
This feature allows viewing the printer's user settings, such as shown on the “Setup list” test
print.
There are 2 possibilities to download the settings from the printer.

User mode
Step 1: Click Setup List Download (txt) in the main window.

 A new confirmation window appears asking if you want to receive the setup list.

Step 2: Browse to the place where you want to store the setup list as a text file and click Save.

 A confirmation window appears, click OK.

Step 3: Browse to the location where you have stored the setup list and open it to view the
setup list.

Technician mode
Step 1: Select Receive in the Setup list tab.

 A new confirmation window appears, click Yes if you want to download the setup list.
 You can see the settings below:

 Using the Save button, you can save the information to a text file.
 Using the Open button, you can extract the setup information from a previously
made parameter (only parameter, not inheritance) backup.

17 Adjustment parameters (technician mode only)
This feature allows you to view the machine's adjustment (Unidir, bidir,…) settings.
Step 1: Select the Adjust Parameters tab.
Step 2: Click Receive to get the settings from the printer.

Step 3: You can see the settings below:

 Using the Save button, you can save this information to a text file.
Step 4: Using the Open button, you can extract the adjustment settings from a previously made
parameter (only parameter, not inheritance) backup.
