LESSON 1 PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTING
FITNESS is a lifelong process. It should be a part of your lifestyle. It is not
something that is practiced only while in school, but it should be done for the rest
of your life.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION Is an integral part of the education program which
aims to promote optimum development of an individual physically, mentally,
socially, emotionally and even spiritually in the performance of properly selected
physical activities.
PHYSICAL FITNESS Is the ability of an individual to do his task efficiently and
without undue fatigue and still has a extra reserve energy in case of an emergency.

LESSON 2 INDIVIDUAL AND DUAL SPORTS


Equipment and Basic Rules of Arnis
Facilities and Equipment
Wooden Stick/ Cane
Wooden sticks measures 27-30 inches long with a diameter of approximately 1
inch. Made from rattan. Sticks which are padded are used for full contact
competition, and non-padded sticks are for anyone.
Head Protector
A pair of protective head gears that include an impact-worthy face mask. Both
must be color coded, red and blue to match the color of the padded stick of the
player.
Body Protector
A protective body gear properly cushioned.
Forearm and Shin Guards
The wearing of forearm and shin guards is compulsory. Both must be color coded.
Uniform
Basic uniforms worn by the player or a student in arnis are white t-shirt, red pants,
and white rubber shoes.
Competition Area
Competition shall be set or held including the free zone around it. The playing area
is a square measuring 8.0 meters by 8.0 meters with two (2) meters minimum free
zone around it.

LESSON 3 SINGLE CANE MOVEMENT


Six Blocking Techniques
1. Inward Block -Blocks the strikes coming from your left.
2. Outward block -Blocks the strikes coming from your right.
3. Downward-Outward Block -Blocks the strikes coming from the right to protect
the right knee.
4. Downward -Inward Block -Blocks the strikes coming from the left to protect
the left knee.
5. Upward Rising Block -Used to protect the head or the crown.
6. Vertical/Rising Block -Used to block the thrusts to the stomach.
12 Striking Techniques
1. Left temples strike 7. Right chest thrust
2. Right temple strike 8. Right knees strike
3. Left elbow strike 9. Left knee strike
4. Right elbow strike 10. Left eyes thrust

LESSON 4 BASIC STANCES AND TRADITIONAL STRIKING
TECHNIQUES
Basic Stances
1. Grip -the proper way of holding the stick. In modern Arnis, about 2 inches of
the cane is left beneath the grip to allow for use as a butt (Punyo). The grip is firm
as through shaking hands and thumb is folded on top of the first finger, the wrist is
relaxed.
2. Courtesy and Bowing -start and end of class/match are characterized by
bowing. It is one way of giving courtesy and respect, a hallmark of Filipino
culture.
3. Ready Stance -Stand with your feet apart parallel to the shoulder with both toes
pointing forward.
4. Forward Stance -Starting with the ready stance, move one foot forward until
theknee and the toe are in line to each other.
5. Oblique Stance -Starting with the ready stance, move one foot forward 45
degrees away from the body until the knee and the toe are in line to each other.
6. Straddle Stance -Starting with the ready stance, move one foot about two feet
to the left or the right direction until both lower legs are almost perpendicular to
the ground.
7. Side Stance -Starting with the ready stance, move one foot about two feet (2‘)
to the left or right direction.
8. Back Stance -Starting with the ready stance, move one foot backward 45
degrees away from the body.

TRADITIONAL STRIKING TECHNIQUES


Abanico Corto and Abanico Largo -The term abanico is a Spanish word which
means fan. These are striking techniques which consist of stick moving in front of
body in a fanning-like movement.
2. Banda Y Banda -A striking technique in which the stick is pointing forward
and swinging it rapidly and horizontally from left to right in front of the body
3. Cross Strike (Ekis) -A diagonal downward movement of the stick to the right
and left alternately across the body.
4. Doblete -A downward strike diagonally and twisting the forearm to make a
circling movement overhead and to strike again forward in a horizontal motion.
5. Ocho -Two upward diagonal strike opposite of an ekis.
6. Rompida -A striking technique which consists of circling the stick in front of
the head before the up and down striking movement in front of the body.
7. Up and Down -A striking technique which is similar to Rompida, except that
the stick is not encircled in front of the body before the up and down movement.
