 A Filipino martial art using


stick or bladed weapons.
 It was originated and
develop in the Philippines
and was practiced and

ARNIS mastered by early Filipinos


HISTORY
 It was known in ancient Philippines as “kali”
believe to have derived from the Indonesian
word tjakalele which means “fencing”
 It was also called as “eskrima”. Eskrima is a
corrupted Spanish word on “skirmish” used by
most Visayan people which refers to fencing.

 The word ARNIS was derived from the word
ARNES which was a colorful trappings on
defensive armors wore by stage performer in
Zarzuela or locally known that time as Moro-
Moro, a drama that depicts stories between

TYPES OF STANCES

Ready Stance
Stand with your feet apart parallel to the
shoulder with both toes pointing forward.

Forward Stance
Starting with the ready stance, move on foot
forward until the knee and toe are in line to
each other.

Attention Stance
Stand with feet at 45 degrees angle, heels
closed together hands at the side and relaxed.

Open-leg Stance
Stand with legs spread apart about shoulder
width with toes pointing slightly outward.

Straddle-leg Stance
Spread legs about twice the width of the
shoulders and bend knees outward, heels
firmly planted and toes pointing straight
forward.

Forward Stance
Move one leg forward at a distance. Bend the
front leg at the knee with the cane in the
center and in fighting form.

Starting with the ready stance, move one foot
about two feet to the left or right direction.

Game Characteristics
 A combative sport played by two individuals using
prescribed padded stick/cane in delivering artistic
blows, strikes and disarming to gain point. Players
usually wear head and body protector.
 Players are paired/matched by Division of weight
categories
 The winner of the match is decided by best of three

 A team may consist of maximum total of four


players with a maximum of one player per
weight division; one coach; one assistant coach;
one trainer and one medical doctor
