Chapter 3

Methodology

3.1 Materials:

• PVC tube size 3”

• PVC Caps 3”

• Omnidirectional Microphones

• PVC coupling size 3”

• Soldering Iron

• Speaker

• Bluetooth Circuit Board

• Coconut Fiber

• Polyester Resin

• Acoustic Foam

• 3 Smartphones w/ sound meter & frequency generator app

• Clay Dough

• Inner Rubber Tire

3.2 Procedure

Fabrication of Cocoform procedure (1cm)

1. After materials have been gathered, take some dried coconut fibers and place them on

the circular mold just enough to reach your desired thickness.

2. Weigh the Polyester Resin (35g) and fill the top layer of the coconut fiber evenly.

3. Leave for about 1-3hours and you can take it out and leave it for curing.

Fabrication of Cocoform procedure (2cm)

1. Take some coconut fibers and place them on the circular mold enough to reach about

half of the desired thickness.

2. Weigh your Polyester Resin (25g) and Fill the top layer evenly.

3. Add a new layer of Coconut fiber to reach the desired thickness.

4. Weight polyester resin (25g) and fill the new top layer.

5. Wait for 1- 3 hours and you can take it out and leave it for curing.
Fabrication of Impedance tube procedure

1. Preparation of materials

2. Solve for the microphone spacing and then place your microphones

3. The microphones are mounted flush with the inner wall of the tube with proper

spacing.

4. For the Test, the sample holder is to simply connect the tubes with standard

Couplings. Couplings provide an easy way to secure the sample and simple

assembly/disassembly.

5. The Speaker source is on the opposite end of the tube or opposite of the test sample

holder.

6. Use clay dough to seal areas for possible sound leaks.

7. Wrap around the PVC tube with the inner rubber tire to prevent any sound escapes

8. Testing for errors and correct if any.

Testing Procedure for Impedance Tube

1. Insert Cocoform with the desired thickness or Acoustic foam into the center of the

test sample holder and seal edges with clay dough to cover flanking paths.

2. Select Sound Frequency and Set Decibel level

3. Measure SPL

4. Repeat steps 1-3 until all samples have been tested.

5. Compare Results.
Volume and Weight of Resin

1. Weigh Resin

2. Mix with coconut fiber

3. Cure then weigh to get the total weight

4. Compute for the volume of coco fiber and resin mix (length x width x height)

5. Measure for the volume of resin in a cup

6. Subtract coco fiber to the resin to find the volume of coco fiber

7. Use fiber over resin in weight to find the ratio
