PRODUCTION OF ASPHALT USING POLYTHENE

AS AN ADDITIVE

CARRIED OUT BY

UDEH HARRISON MADUABUCHI

AND

NGENE IFEANYI SAMUEL

BACKGROUND
• Recent increases in road traffic, coupled with
insufficient maintenance in developing countries
have contributed immensely to accelerated and
continuous deterioration of the road network.
• Polymer modified binder have been shown to
improve adhesion, cohesion, stiffness and general
stability of bituminous materials.
• This project reports an investigation on the
performance of high density polyethylene (HDPE)
as additive in production of asphalt concrete; it
was only the bitumen that was varied with
polyethylene whereas other constituent materials
of asphalt were kept constant
• Asphalt as the word implies is a sticky, black
and highly viscous liquid or semi solid form of
petroleum used for pavements and as a
waterproof cement.
• Bitumen is a black viscous mixture of
hydrocarbons obtained naturally or as a
residue from petroleum distillation.
• a tough, light flexible synthetic resin made by
polymerizing ethylene, chiefly used for plastic
bags, food containers, and other packaging.
PURPOSE OF STUDY

• The aim of this study is to use Polythene as an

additive bond together with other aggregates to
produce asphalt.

• Use of waste Polythene as an additive in asphalt

production cannot be over emphasized.

• This study generally will help improve the strength

and durability of the pavement and also reduce
the problems associated with the disposal of
waste polythene in the country.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
• Detailed analysis of the mechanical properties of asphalt and aggregates.
• To find out whether replacing some percentage of bitumen with polythene will still
give the exact test result.
• To help determine the gradation of aggregates using polythene as an additive to
yield a mix.
• To improve the rheological properties of asphalt binders and to increase their
resistance to thermal cracking, fatigue cracking respectively at low, immediate and
high temperature.
• It focuses on the analysis of strength and behavior of asphalt mix with different
types of aggregates.
• To give steps and the following stages involved with polythene as additive.
• To help give sufficient workability so as to allow an efficient construction operation
in the placement of the paving mix.
• To check whether using polythene as an additive can bond with other aggregates.
• To ensure a lasting pavement by adequately and thoroughly coating the aggregate
particles and bonding them together under suitable compaction.
• To know the strength and stability of polythene modified asphalt.
SCOPE OF STUDY
• This work will be concerned with the design of
asphalted concrete using polythene as an
additive.

• Determining the strength, stability and flow of

the mix using Marshall test and densities to
asphalt pavement mixes .

• The proportion ratio of the materials to

achieve a good mix.
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

• To improve the durability and strength of the

pavement.

• To reduce the cost of asphalt production.

• To reduce environmental pollutions which disposal of

waste polythene has caused in the country.

• To create job opportunity

LABORATORY PROCEDURE USING
MARSHALL METHOD

• PREPARATION OF TEST SAMPLES (TRIAL)

• SPECIFIC GRAVITY

• GENERAL TEST CARRIED OUT

• EQUIPMENT USED IN MARSHALL TEST

Sample “A” to “E” kept to cool after extruded from the
extruding machine
RESULT ANALYSIS
 A graphical plot is prepared for the average stability of the following
samples;

• Sample A (Control ie 6% bitumen + 0% Polythene as an additive)

• Sample B (1% bitumen + 1% Polythene as an additive).

• Sample C (4% bitumen + 2% Polythene as an additive).

• Sample D (3% bitumen + 3% Polythene as an additive).

• Sample E (2% bitumen + 4% Polythene as an additive).

• Were plotted against Flow. Which after a graph of the Average

stability including all the samples Were also plotted against the
Flow.
A Graphical representation of all the samples
CONCLUSION
• In the course for providing lasting solution to our
highway pavement and the reduction of its cost,
this research was carried out to investigate the
effect of polythene modified bitumen on the
properties of hot mix asphalt concrete.

• The polythene additives do not alter the chemical

composition and nature of the bitumen being
modified rather the polythene alters and change
the physical nature of the bitumen
• The polythene will also compliment the
adhesive, cohesive and long resistance of
Asphalt being modified which in turn changes
the physical properties of the aggregate
mixture in which the modified
