UDL list of checkpoints and students’ activity in the

classroom

Checkpoint 1.1 – Offer ways of customizing the display of information. (Establishment

steps)
• Post a timeline of yard growth from the beginning stages to what your yard should look
like.
• Hand clipboards on the walls each representing good and bad lawns,
• Post coming soon signs on the walls/windows of what will happen next if the yard it
plant correctly or incorrectly.

Checkpoint 1.2 - Offer alternatives for auditory information (Installing sod)

• Individuals will have to watch several different training modules on how to install sod
and decide which one is the right way to do so.
• Charts will be places around the classroom to show the growth rate of sod compared to
planting regular grass seed.
• Charts will be provided to students to show the difference between the cost of sod and
the cost of planting grass by seed.

Checkpoint 3.4 - Maximize transfer and generalization (Establishment)

• Individuals will be provided a lawn care folders which they can add to weekly. They can
use this folder to come back and retrieve older information incase their lawn is not
coming in properly.
• Individuals will be provided a weekly checklist on what they will expected to do for their
lawn.
• Individuals will have a weekly assignment where they can continuously track their lawns
progress throughout the year.

Checkpoint 4.1 - Vary the methods for response and navigation (converting old lawns)
• Individuals will make a poster presentation on how they would convert their old lawns
into new lawns. They must show the order in what they would take to replace their old
lawn. Individuals will present their information and ask for feedback on what they may
have done wrong.

Checkpoint 5.1 - Use multiple media for communication (Maintenance established lawn)
• Individuals will use a chat site to talk about how they are maintaining their lawns. If
someone is having problems with bugs, or if their lawn is struggling to grow, then they
can revert to the chat site for help. Here other individuals or a teacher will be able to
help others out if they are having problems with their lawns.
Checkpoint 5.3 - Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and
performance.
• All lawns come in different, and all lawns are maintained differently. I would create a
model on how several different individuals took care of their lawn and how they all got
the same results. Sometimes when taking care of a lawn individuals found that using
certain steps a different way, they still got the same result as an individual that followed
the correct steps.

Checkpoint 6.2 - Support planning and strategy development (When to fertilize)

• Fertilizing Is a STOP AND THINK before you do
• Individuals will revert to the last power point slide on deciding when they should fertilize
their lawn.
• They also must make sure that their lawn is fully established before putting down
chemicals.

Checkpoint 6.3 - Facilitate managing information and resources (weed/disease control)

• Individuals will be provided an organizer and template that will already have what weeds
maybe in their lawn and what diseases the lawn may have. They will have to keep tabs
on if their lawn does have a lot of weeds or a disease in it how would they treat it, and
what methods worked best for controlling the problem.

Checkpoint 8.1 - Heighten salience of goals and objectives (Display goals in multiple ways)
• Here I will display ways for individuals to succeed in establishing their lawn.
• 1. You can install by SOD
• 2. You can install with Grass seed
• 3. You can use mushroom manure as a fertilizer
• 4. You can use straw as a fertilizer
• 5. Best time to plant is in the spring or fall not summer.
6. Don’t get discouraged if lawn doesn’t come in right away, follow the steps, and
you will reach your goals

Checkpoint 9.1 - Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation

• It’s important to have individuals being looked over by professionals that have
experience putting in lawns.
• Everyone will be provided a coach or mentor to check in with so they can make sure they
are reaching their goals of having a great lawn.
• These mentors will also be available if any problems arise with installing a lawn and
fighting insects and questions about fertilization.
Checkpoint 9.3 - Develop self-assessment and reflection (Assessment tool)
• Click on the link and watch the video on how to plant a lawn. After watching it I would
like the individuals to express if this was the correct way to install a new lawn and
identify if the man in the video missed any steps while he was installing the new lawn.
You can revert to the PowerPoint as a reference.
