Students invited about retrofitting in videos by instructor Berhane Aregawi , how to retrofit,
methods of retrofitting, types of retrofitting and technics of retrofitting. And then, students
discussed about which types of retrofitting is good according to economical use, ease of
construction and strength of structure. Based on the discussion, students asked different types of
questions about retrofitting.
There are different technics of retrofitting those are concrete jacketing around column, slit on
brick standing wall, RC-shear wall, RC- wing wall, steel frame braced, carbon fiber sheet
wrapping. Among these, ease of construction-carbon fiber sheet wrapping is the simplest and
durable but it cost is very expensive than other retrofitting methods. According to cost of
retrofitting, concrete jacketing around column is preferable
Which technics of retrofitting is most effective one? (instructor asked)
Given answer:-
carbon fiber sheet wrapping is the most effective retrofitting technics. Because it has the high
ductile strength, high toughness and durable.
How can we know the performance of existing structures?(student asked)
Given answer:-
by using electronics device/sensors and,
by using design documents such as –working drawing , specification document ,design period
After deep excavation of black cotton soil for the purpose of building structure and
retaining wall, backfill of the selected materials are well compacted. But after
constructed, the retaining wall settled depart from grade beams. What are the causes and
solutions of this problem? (student asked)
Given answer:-
The case of these problem may be –ground water table, Not very compacted, material quality,
construction problem. In order to support the grade beam additional support should be provided.
but it is better to use suspended slab in black cotton soil because in suspended slab there is no
much uplift pressure , and is more economical than that of excavated extra depth compared to
back fill of excavated depth.
If the compressive strength of concrete slab is not adequate when we check after it is
constructed, what are the mechanisms to retrofit this problem? (student asked)
Given answer:-
Concrete washing:-It uses primarily after a reclaimed , slurry is pumped in to a filter press, which
then uses flood pressure to dewater the cement fines, creating a dry cake of cement fines and
water that can be reused in the batch plant.
Increasing depth of concrete slab by chiseling of the surface so that there could be enough
bondage between the existing and new mass.
What are the difference between construction joints, contraction joints and expansion
joints? (student asked)
Given answer:-
Construction joint occurs when there are multiple concrete placements. It can occur between
different days of placements.
example:- there is a joint between the placement of a footing and the placement of column.
contraction joint is a joint that put in the concrete to control cracking. for example when they
sawcut joints into the concrete pavement.
contraction joint is a joint that allows the concrete or steel to expand or contract with daily
temperature variations.
Now a day there are different types of retrofitting mechanisms such as, concrete jacketing around
column, slit on brick standing wall, RC-shear wall, RC- wing wall, steel frame braced, carbon
fiber sheet wrapping and etc. that are suitable for maintaining existing structures.
