Difference between dry heat sterilization vs moist heat sterilization
Dry heat sterilization
In this process the microorganisms
(including spores) are killed using dry
heat.
Chief cause of the microbial death is
oxidation.
The sterilization process is conducted in
an apparatus known as Hot-air oven.
It requires more time.
It requires more temperature to sterilize.
More time required to complete the
process.
Done for the products which cannot
withstand moisture. (Vehicle for oily
injection, fatty acid ester etc.)
Less damaging to the metal and
glassware.
Not used for thermolabile products.

apparatus known as Autoclave or by using boiling
water or steam under atmospheric pressure.
It requires less time.
It requires less temperature to sterilize.
Less time required to complete the process.
Done for the product which does not degrade in
contact of water.
More damaging to the metal and glassware (can
make the glass appear cloudy and can cause rust in
metal).
Can be used for thermolabile product in an extent.
Post sterilization drying necessary.
