PERCENTAGE IN MEDICINE

Percent
• Percent means ‘parts of a hundred’ or a ‘proportion of a hundred’.
• The symbol for per cent is %, so 30% means 30 parts or units of a hundred.
• Percentages are often used to give a quick indication of a specific quantity and are very useful when
making comparisons.

Norms for the new born child:

1. Body weight 3300 gm. for girls and 3500 gm. for boys
2. Body length 50-52 cm
Body weight increase 800 gm per month at the first half the year and 400 gm at the second.
m by norm = m was born + 800∙ n

n – number of month, if 0< n≤ 6

m by norm= m was born+ 4800+400(n – 6)
n – number of month, if 6< n≤ 12
m д by norm = 10+2∙n , where 10 is approximate weight of 1 year old child, 2 kg average increase per year. By this
formula we can calculate the weight of child 1 to 10 years, n – age of child.

From 10 years old we use another formula mby norm = 30+4(n -10), where 30 kg average weight of 10 years old
child, 4 kg average increase per year and n – age of child.

Body length up to 1 year increase monthly:

I quarter 3 cm;

II quarter 2.5 cm;

III quarter 1.5 cm;
IV quarter 1 cm
After 1 year we can calculate body length by using following formula 75+6n, where 75 cm is an average
height of 1 year child, 6 cm – average increase per year, n – age of child
Calculating of feeding. Shkarin’s formula
Vper day=800 ± 50n
If n – number of weeks up to 8 then formula is taken by “minus” sign
If n – number of months more than 2, then formula is taken by “plus” sign
V
Vtimes = , N – number of feedings per day.

1 Find 3% of 340?
S.P/100
=340*3/100 = 10.2

2 Find the number, if 5% of that is 0.2.

X = 0.2 x 100/5
X=4

3 In all shops hang ads: «On Saturdays - 3% discount". On Tuesday, in one of these stores was
bought parquet lacquer on the amount of 25,000 som. How much would cost the same amount
of varnish on Saturday?

Original price =25000 soms

The discounted price amount will be 25000 - 3%of 25000
3% of 25000 will be 25000*3/100 =750
The discounted price on saturday is 25000-750=24250 soms

4 Income tax on salaries is 12%. What taxes to pay to citizen if his salary is:
a) 4500 som.
b) 800 som.
c) 1250 som.

So in this question we just have to find 12% of each value

We will use the formula S*P/100
A} 4500*12/100=540
B} 800*12/100=96
C} 1250*12/100=150
5 Over the last month petrol went up by 25%. How much was the liter of gasoline last month if
now it is 360 som?

b=a(1+P/100)^n
360=a(1+25/100)
360=a(125/100)
a=360/1.25
a=288

6 Ticket for students on public transport costs 54 som. How many percent of the scholarship is the
price of the ticket if the scholarship is:
a) 94 som.
b) 120 som.
c) 170 som.

a) 94 som. We will use the

formula S*P/100=X
A} 94*x/100=54
X=57.446%
B} 120*x/100=54
X=45%
C}170*x/100=54
X=31.76%
7 What amount of dry matter contained in 100 grams of a 3%
solution? How much of an 8% solution contains in the same
amount of 3% solution?

Mass of dry matter is

100*3/100 =3 grams, 97g or percent of water
B} x*8/100=3
X=37.5, 62.5% of water

8 What percentage of solids content in the resulting solution obtained if 100 grams of 10%
aqueous solution of the substance added another 100 grams of water?

Mass of substance in original =10 gram

Mass of solution is 200g
Concentration =mass of substance /mass of solution*100
=10/200*100
=5%
Find the concentration of the solution, if 0.5 g of the substance dissolved in 9.5 g of water.
9
Concentration =mass of substance /mass of solution *100
0.5/10*100=5%
10 The baby was born weighing 3 kg 100 g Determine a would weight in 4
months.

Mass of baby at birth is 3100g

Use the formula mcurrant = mass at birth +800n
M=3100+3200
M=6300g or 6kg 300 gram
11 Birth weight is 2 kg 900 g Determine the weight of the child in 8 months.

Mass of baby at birth 2900g

Use the formula mcurrant = mass at birth +4800+400{n-6}
M=2900+4800+800
M=8500g or 8 kg 500grams

12 Define a body length of 3 month old baby

Body length at birth is 50-52cm, length increases by 3 cm per month in first 3 months
So length after 3 month will be 50-52+3*3 = 59-61cm

13 Define a body length would increase in 9-month-old baby

Body length at birth is 50-52 cms ,1-3 Months 3 cm per month, 4-6 months 2.5 per month, 7-9
months 1.5 cm per month
so length after 9 months will be 50-52+9+7.5+4.5= 71-73cms

14 Is there enough 5-week-old baby 100 ml milk 6 times a day?

Use the formula 800-50n

800-250=550ml
v/feeding =550/6 =91.6 ml
so baby is having enough
