composition of breast milk.
Methods for calculating daily food volume and diet
Methods of calculating the daily volume of food of the child for the first 7-8 days life

• 1. Finkilstein's method: a coefficient that depends on body weight at

birth, multiply by n - age in days.
• If the body weight is at birth 3200 g or more, the coefficient is 80, if less,
the coefficient-70.
• Example:
• 1) The child is 8 days old, the body weight at birth is 3300 g. V daily =
80×8 =640 ml.
• 2) The child is 7 days old, the body weight at birth is 3000 g. V daily =
70×7= 490 ml.
• This method is used up to 2 weeks of life, in the future use other methods

• 2. Zaitseva's method (formula): 2% of body weight at birth multiply by
n - the child's age in days.
• Example:
• 1) The child is 8 days old, the body weight at birth is 3900 g. V daily =
39×2×8= 624 ml.
• 2) The child is 7 days old, the body weight at birth is 3100 g. V daily
=31×2×7= 434 ml.
• Zaitseva's formula is more indicated for children with high body
weight birth. In other cases, it is optimal to use the formula
Finkelstein.

food of the child for the first 7-8 days life
• 3. Tour's method (formula).
• This method does not take into account body weight birth V daily =
10×7×n, where 10 is the coefficient, 7 is the frequency feedings, n –
age in days.
• Example:
• 1) The child is 8 days old. V daily = 10×7×8 = 560 ml.
• 2) The child is 7 days old, the body weight at birth is 3100 g. V daily
=10×7×7= 490 ml.
Methods of calculating the daily amount of food for
children older than 2 weeks life.

• In advance, it is necessary to determine the appropriate body weight of

the child, respectively age
• Basic concepts.
• 1. Body weight at birth - mass mo
• 2. Proper body weight (mn), which should be at this age – mo +
supplement in body weight
• 3. Actual body weight - body weight at the moment after weighing
• 4. Approximate proper body weight - actual body weight + 20% of the
actual, approximately appropriate body weight is calculated in the
group hypotrophy patients.
Methods of calculating the daily amount of
food for children older than 2 weeks life.
• 1. Volumetric (volumetric-weight) method.
• The essence of the method is to take a certain part of the appropriate
body weight in certain areas age groups.
• The method is used up to 9 months.
• 2 weeks - 2 months - 1/5 of the proper body weight;
• 2 months - 4 months - 1/6 of the proper body weight;
• 4 months - 6 months - 1/7 of the proper body weight;
• 6 months - 9 months - 1/8 of the proper body weight.
Methods of calculating the daily amount of food for children older than 2 weeks life.

• 2. Energy (calorie) method.

• The essence of the method: is determined proper body weight and daily
energy requirement, the next step is determined the volume of milk that is
needed to replenish the daily energy requirement.
• Example: The child is 3.5 months old. mo - 3300 g
• a) appropriate body weight mn = mo + 800×3.5mn = 3300 + 2800 = 6100 g
• b) daily energy requirement Ed = 115 × 6.1 = 701.5 kcal
• c) 1000 ml of human milk - 650 kcal X = (1000×701) : 650 = 1078 ml
• V daily: 1078 ml ≈ 1000 ml For a child of the first year of life, the daily amount
of food should not be more than 1000 ml.
• The energetic method is used before the introduction of supplementary food.
Algorithm for creating a menu

1. Appropriate body weight

2. Methods of calculating the daily amount of food:
a) volumetric method
b) caloric (energy)
c) average daily amount of food
3. We determine the frequency of feeding
4. Volume of food per feeding (one time)
5. We make a menu
6. We justify the conclusion
Example
• The child is 4.5 months old, body weight at birth 3400 g. Natural feeding.
• 1. We calculate the proper body weight mn = mo + 800×4.5 = 3400 + 800×4.5 =
7000 g
• 2. We calculate the daily volume of food using the volumetric method Vd. = 7000 ×
1/7 = 1000 ml
• 3. We calculate the daily amount of food using the energy (calorie) method
• a) daily energy requirement Ed = 115×7.0 = 805 kcal
• b) 1000 ml of human milk - 650 kcal x = 805 kcal x › 1000 ml ≈ 1000 ml Vd = 1000
ml
• Note: Both methods determined the same volume of food. In this case, we do not
determine the average daily volume (illogically).
• 4. Frequency (multiplicity) of feedings – 6-5. Food volume of one feeding = 1000 /
6 = 166.6 ml ≈ 165 ml
