Infant Milk Formula Feeding

For Healthy Babies

Age Amount of Formula Required

5 days - 3 months 150 ml/kg/day

3 - 6 months 120 ml/kg/day

6 - 12 months 90 - 120 ml/kg/day

Premature babies need more formula. At first, they usually need about 160–180 ml of formula
per kilogram of body weight per day. Your neonatal doctor or maternal and child health nurse
will advise you.

Key Numbers
1. Breast Milk = 20 kcals/ounce
2. Formula Milk = 20 kcals/ounce (or varies depending on formula)
3. 1 ounce = 30cc

4. Average Baby Needs =

Example:
Find kCals/kg/day
Given:
Weight = 3 kgs
Intake in a day (I/O) = 360cc Milk

20 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙
= 360 cc 𝑥
30 𝑐𝑐
= 240 kcal
240 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙
=
3 𝑘𝑔
= 80 kcal/kg/day

Computing Calorie Goals

Example:
How many cc a day should a patient take in?

Given:
Weight = 3 kgs
Goal = 126 kcal/kg/day
= 26 kcal/ounce Formula

26 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙 120 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙

30 𝑐𝑐
= 𝑋 𝑐𝑐

*Cross Multiply?

X = 140 cc/kg/day

= 140 cc/kg/day x 3 kg
= 420 cc/day

Energy Recommendations

Formula:
DBW/IBW - (Age x 2) + 8 = kg

Example:
Given Age: 4 years old

=4x2+8
= 16 kg

If converting to lbs
= 2.2 x 16
= 35.2 lbs

TER
= 1,000 + (100 x Age)
= 1,000 + 400
= 1,400 kcal
